Grammys: Kendrick Lamar Dedicates Record of the Year Win for “Not Like Us” to L.A.

During the 2025 Grammy Awards, one of the most prestigious honors of the evening, the Record of the Year award, was given to Kendrick Lamar for his song “Not Like Us.

Following Miley Cyrus presenting the award and jokingly hinting she might say Beyoncé’s name instead, it was eventually disclosed that Lamar had won the award. Upon reaching the stage to collect the golden gramophone trophy, Lamar dedicated his victory to the city of Los Angeles.

Miley Cyrus presented the award and teased she might say Beyoncé’s name instead, but it was actually Lamar who won. He then climbed onto the stage to receive the golden gramophone trophy, at which point he announced his dedication of the win to Los Angeles.

He mentions various locations such as Compton, Watts, Long Beach, Inglewood, Hollywood, the Valley, Pacoima, IE (Inland Empire), San Bernardino, and others. These places are familiar to him because they’ve been a part of his life since he was in the studio working hard on writing the best rhymes, with the ultimate goal of creating tracks like these.

He talks about places like Compton, Watts, Long Beach, Inglewood, Hollywood, moving out to the Valley, Pacoima, IE (Inland Empire), San Bernardino, and more. These are his neighborhoods that have supported him throughout his journey, especially during his time in the studio striving to write top-notch rhymes for tracks like these.

Lamar adds, “I want to express my deep gratitude to the places I’ve visited since high school, especially those in the Palisades and Altadena. The people and families there are truly remarkable. This shows that our city can indeed be rebuilt, and we will continue to thrive.

The “Record of the Year” award honors the outstanding single recording in its entirety, encompassing both the exceptional performance and production of the track.

I’ve managed to snatch the top spot from The Beatles on “Now And Then,” bested Beyoncé on “Texas Hold ‘Em,” outshone Sabrina Carpenter on “Espresso,” overpowered Charli XCX on “360,” beat Billie Eilish on “Birds of a Feather,” and edged Chappell Roan on “Good Luck, Babe!” And to top it all off, I outdid Taylor Swift featuring Post Malone on “Fortnight.” What a ride!

Originally part of Kendrick Lamar’s series of diss tracks aimed at Drake during their ongoing dispute, “Not Like Us” transformed into a globally recognized anthem, climbing to the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This song is also the subject of a defamation lawsuit filed by Drake against Universal Music Group, the label that both artists are signed with.

The 2025 Grammy Ceremony, led by Trevor Noah, was broadcast live on Sunday directly from the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. To discover the complete roster of victors, click here. For a glimpse of the glamorous entrances, check it out here.
