In Monster Hunter Wilds, there’s an abundance of weapon options to select from. The journey to becoming a hunter begins by choosing one that feels right for you. Some weapons emphasize quick strikes and evasive maneuvers, while others favor slower, powerful attacks that require direct confrontation with the monsters.
For both novice players eager to join the esteemed ranks of Greatsword wielders and seasoned veterans seeking fresh experiences with this legendary weapon, here’s some valuable information that should prove useful on your journey. The iconic Greatsword is ideally suited for delivering powerful, direct attacks.
Greatsword Overview
The Greatsword is a weapon that is quite heavy, making its movements somewhat sluggish. However, each strike it delivers deals an unusually high amount of damage. In terms of difficulty, using the Greatsword sits somewhere in the mid-range; it’s not overly complicated to learn, but mastering its use requires a good grasp of the game mechanics, timing windows, and enemy patterns for optimal performance.
Beyond that, unlike in past games, where the primary gameplay with the Greatsword involved landing a heavy blow, sheathing the weapon, and running around until a chance presented itself, in Wilds, you can adopt a more offensive playstyle thanks to the available counter moves.
Offset Rising Slash

In Monster Hunter Wilds, a fresh technique for the Greatsword has been introduced – the Offset attack, which enables you to counterattack a monster’s attack when timed appropriately. To execute this move, press it precisely as the monster is preparing to strike you, and not only will you repel the attack, but you might also knock the monster over for the first instance. However, repeated uses of this technique will progressively lower the chances of toppling the monster.
After nailing that move flawlessly, you can proceed by executing a Cross Slash, which will inflict immense damage on the monster and potentially shatter its injuries as well.
For as long as you maintain the Offset Rising Slash position, don’t hold it indefinitely. If you’re keeping it active, expecting the monster to attack but missing instead, you’ll leave yourself exposed and open for a counterattack, potentially leading to being knocked down by the monster.
True Charged Slash

This action is a signature strike using the Greatsword, known for dishing out the highest individual damage among all weapons in the game. You’re given the choice to amplify your standard attack, strike the monster, and then continue with a series of successive charged attacks. The ultimate charged attack in this sequence is the True Charged Slash, capable of dealing immense damage and shattering parts of the monster.
However, while you use it, you have to execute the three charges properly to make it work:
- Level One: Hold the attack button until your character glows red, and you will land the level one strike on the monster.
- Level Two: Once the attack is executed, immediately hold the attack button once again and keep doing so until your character glows red for the second hit.
- Level Three. Repeat the same as level two, and you will land two massive hits on the monster, with the second hit being the True Charged Slash.
The more time a device is charged, the more susceptible it becomes to issues, so it’s advisable to familiarize yourself with the optimal charging times before using it.
Greatsword Strengths

Greatsword is an exceptionally powerful weapon, and it comes with quite a lot of benefits:
- You can easily break monster parts with Greatswords since the True Charged Slash deals so much damage that it can trigger the threshold for the various parts a lot quicker.
- Shoulder Tackle and Offset Rising Slash allow you to tackle through monster’s attacks and continue your combos.
- Greatswords don’t require as much frequent sharpening as compared to something like Dual Blades or Long Swords.
Greatsword Weaknesses

Here’s a look at some of the glaring weaknesses of a Greatsword:
- Despite the big damage numbers and all the counter moves it has, the weapon can feel clunky for a new player. It is slow and relies heavily on timing your attacks and reading the monster’s moves. As such, for a new player, a hunt that takes five minutes can go up to 30 minutes due to a lack of understanding of timing windows.
- You walk very slowly with the weapon in your hand, which means you are susceptible to monsters knocking you down as you try to run away.
- The Greatsword also has a really big recovery timing after launching a big attack. If you aren’t careful, you will be left vulnerable multiple times during a fight.
Greatsword Combos and Tips
Basic Combo

One effective pairing for the Greatsword is the Forward Lunging Combo. To perform it, start by executing a Wide Slash, then follow it up with a Tackle, and finally cap it off with a Leaping Wide Slash. The advantage of this sequence is that it lets you quickly close distance between yourself and the monster, all while enabling you to counter any moves the monster might initiate during combat.
It may not cause extensive harm, but it serves well as an initial move, particularly when the monster is beyond your reach.
True Charged Slash Combo

In this scenario, you’ll employ this technique when the monster is either weakened or knocked down. The unique aspect lies in the fact that instead of taking time to build up charge, you rapidly discharge your level one and level two abilities simultaneously. This swift action enables you to execute a powerful True Charged Slash more quickly, inflicting significant damage on the monster.
You can dodge one of the charges by hitting ‘tackle’. This gives you the chance to preserve your charge level and unleash True Charged Slash without getting hit mid-attack by a pesky monster.
For optimal results, aim to execute the Powerful Charged Strike on vulnerable areas of the monster’s body. By performing this strike on less fortified regions, your Powerful Charged Strike will transform into a Powerful Charged Strike (Power), dealing massive damage to the monster.
It’s wise to keep in mind that charging a lower price ensures less overall harm, but maintaining consistency in your pricing allows you to consistently land your True Charged Slash, rather than aiming for a larger damage figure and potentially missing it.
Focus Slash

In this game, the recently introduced Focus mode offers considerable advantages, particularly when wielding a Greatsword. You can perform a special move called “Focused Strike: Pierce Through,” which makes it simple to penetrate and shatter monster injuries in just one strike. Once the monster has several wounds on its body, utilize this move, and you’ll slice your Greatsword through the monster, causing significant damage and eliminating all the existing injuries.
In this game, the Focus mode allows you to adjust your course during a charging attack, ensuring you hit the True Charged Slash squarely on a monster’s head. Previously, once the True Charged Slash was initiated, its direction couldn’t be changed. But now, with the Focus Mode, you can make those crucial mid-attack adjustments to land the perfect strike.
Perfect Guard

The Greatsword offers a special defensive move known as “Perfect Guard.” With this feature, you can employ the weapon as a shield at the exact moment an enemy strikes you, initiating a “Power Clash.” This action will propel the monster away from you, providing an opportunity to execute a powerful follow-up attack called a “True Charged Slash,” dealing significant damage to the creature.
Mastering this technique requires a deep understanding of the monster’s attack patterns and the precise timing of each move. But when you get the hang of it together with the Offset Rising Slash, it significantly speeds up your hunting expeditions.
