An unanticipated collaboration between stars from The Office and Green Day, a punk rock band famous for songs like “Basket Case,” “American Idiot,” and “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” caught my attention. They’re teaming up for an unusual new movie that doesn’t have anything to do with the Australian adaptation of the long-running sitcom about office life, which was not well-received. Instead, this film seems more promising and interesting.
Based on Variety’s report, Live Nation Productions is collaborating with Green Day to develop a comedic movie reminiscent of their wild early touring years, featuring The Office’s Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey in the cast. Titled “New Years Rev,” the story revolves around three friends portrayed by Mason Thames from “The Black Phone,” Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust. Although these actors will not depict Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, or Tré Cool of Green Day, they will play a band that thinks they’re opening for Green Day on New Year’s Eve in Los Angeles.
In an official statement on the film, co-executive producer Ryan Kroft said:
Under the skillful tutelage of Green Day, New Years Rev narrates the tale of aspiring artists pursuing their dream – filled with late nights, tireless travel, and the exhilarating thrill of performing on stage. The story comes alive through a talented ensemble, making it a heartfelt salute to the enchanting power of live music.
According to director Lee Kirk, this upcoming road trip comedy takes viewers on a lively and playful journey across the nation, brimming with escapades inspired by the antics of Green Day during their tour van years. Billie Joe Armstrong, lead singer of Green Day, shared some insights about the film’s inspiration for “New Year’s Eve.
Night drives under ‘Van Days’ rule are exhilarating, even if they mean spending hours on end without rest to perform for just ten kids in a distant friend’s basement, miles away from any familiar location. Yet, you find yourself eagerly agreeing to do it all over again the next day and beyond. This is because your bandmates transform into a unique kind of family, creating an experience that’s unparalleled and electrifying. So here’s to the tunes and adventures!
Talk About a Comeback
The California rock group unveiled its newest album titled “Saviors” in 2024 and will be headlining Coachella this coming April. Meanwhile, Fischer has shared another inspiring news bit: she’s victorious over breast cancer and is now cancer-free. As for Kinsey and her podcast partner, they have been lending their support to Fischer during her diagnosis, and now the duo are working on an upcoming road trip comedy that is currently being filmed in Oklahoma.
Live Nation Productions, a division of Live Nation Entertainment responsible for film and television projects, has a history of creating music-related ventures. Previous works by them include the Academy Award-winning remake of “A Star Is Born” and the critically acclaimed David Bowie documentary titled “Moonage Daydream”. In addition to these, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Keen Ruffalo are part of the cast for the upcoming project known as “New Years Rev“.
