Green Lantern Fans Are Freaking Out Over Josh Brolin's Rumored Casting As Hal Jordan. Why I Think It Could Be A Brilliant Move For HBO's Lanterns

As a long-time comic book enthusiast and Green Lantern fanatic, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about the casting rumors surrounding Josh Brolin for the role of Hal Jordan in the upcoming series, “Lanterns.” While I understand the concerns about an established actor like Brolin playing a character that could have launched a lesser-known talent’s career, his experience in portraying complex characters with comic book roots makes him a compelling choice.

Among the upcoming DC TV shows officially slated for the DC Universe franchise is the Green Lantern-focused Lanterns, which earned an eight-episode order in June and will now air on HBO first, then be released to those who have a Max subscription, as opposed to being a Max-exclusive series as originally intended. Lanterns will follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart being “drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland,” and over the weekend, it was rumored that Josh Brolin has been offered the role of Hal. This has prompted a lot of outrage from fans who think Brolin isn’t a good fit to play the first human member of the Green Lantern Corps, but there’s a specific reason why I think this could end up being a brilliant move for Lanterns.

To set the record straight, I’m expressing my doubts about Josh Brolin portraying Hal Jordan following the recent casting report from Nexus Point News. On one hand, I get DC’s reasoning behind choosing an actor like Brolin, who has already made a name for himself in comic book adaptations with roles such as Jonah Hex, Thanos, and Cable. However, it would be refreshing to see a less-known actor make their mark on the character, potentially propelling their career significantly with a role in Lanterns.

If Josh Brolin is chosen to play Hal Jordan, or if another actor close to his age takes on the role, it seems likely that the film “Lanterns” plans to depict the storyline of Hal Jordan’s arc with Parallax. In the ’90s, after Coast City was destroyed by Cyborg Superman and Mongul, Hal Jordan fell into madness and attacked Oa in an attempt to obliterate the Central Power Battery and gain all its power. During this rampage, he killed most of the Guardians of the Universe and severely weakened the Green Lantern Corps. However, both the Guardians and the Corps eventually recovered from these events. Interestingly, it was later discovered that Hal wasn’t just going bad on his own, but had been influenced by the Parallax entity, a manifestation of fear.

To effectively cover the storyline of Parallax involving Hal Jordan, it’s crucial that he’s deeply embedded in the Green Lantern Corps for an extended period. Given this requirement, it makes sense why DC Studios might consider Josh Brolin for the role. His acting experience can convey the gravitas needed for a character who has spent years patrolling Sector 2814 and will be mentoring newcomer John Stewart. Moreover, his acting skills enable him to convincingly portray Hal’s transformation into Parallax when necessary.

If everything unfolds as planned, I won’t mind the difference in age between Hal Jordan and John Stewart so much. In fact, casting Brolin could be a smart decision if Hal eventually appears in one of the future DC films. However, it’s important to note that instead of immediately turning Hal into Parallax, let’s first enjoy seeing him as a hero on screen. He deserves some time in the spotlight to help erase the memory of Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern movie from our minds.

The show titled “Lanterns” hasn’t fixed its debut date yet, but notable figures behind the scenes include Chris Mundy (from Ozark) serving as the showrunner and executive producer, while Damon Lindelof and Tom King are also on board for writing and producing roles, alongside Mundy. We’ll keep you updated if Josh Brolin is confirmed to portray Hal Jordan, along with revealing who will be cast as the DCU’s John Stewart when that information becomes available.
