Greg Ito Transforms Rockefeller Center with ‘The Enlightenment’

Summary

Artist Greg Ito, based in Los Angeles, is currently dominating Rockefeller Center with “The Enlightenment,” a lively public display. This colorful exhibition is being shared in collaboration with Art Production Fund as part of the Art in Focus initiative.

From June 2, a multi-site installation showcases various art forms including paintings, sculptures, dioramas, and photographic works. These pieces are inspired by personal experiences and explore ideas related to transformation. Ito started several of these paintings during the California wildfires, using symbols like flames, flowers, doorways, and setting suns to depict cycles of destruction and rebirth.

45 Rockefeller Plaza is where Ito creatively converts street-level display windows into sculptural installations, each illuminated by cinematic lighting that transitions from daylight to twilight. Close by, a 125-foot long vinyl narrative wraps around the lower-level skating rink space, combining staged photos and painted visuals.

At 45 Rockefeller Plaza, Ito changes street windows into sculptural installations using cinematic lighting that goes from day to dusk. Nearby, a 125-foot long vinyl wraps the lower skating rink area with a storytelling sequence that mixes staged photos and paintings.

For the very first time, my eyes have the privilege of beholding Ito’s paintings and photographs simultaneously, displayed so grandly in this public arena. The narrative is further emphasized throughout various Rockefeller structures, as similar themes are repeated like a thread weaving through the exhibition.

On June 26th, between 2 PM and 5 PM, an engaging children’s workshop will be held at no cost, jointly hosted by Ito and Art Production Fund, with Leatherology providing support. This event is part of our programming and “The Enlightenment” exhibit can be seen until August 29th.
