As a gamer with a knack for nostalgia and an unwavering love for the 80s, I can wholeheartedly say that the new season of Gremlins, titled “The Wild Batch,” has truly brought back memories. Growing up with the original Gremlins movies, it’s a delight to see the franchise return with George Takei reprising his role and bringing Noggin to life in an even more menacing way!

After the streaming show brought Gizmo to a new medium for 2023’s Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai release, the story has continued with the second season titled The Wild Batch, and it has more George Takei and a solid homage to the original sequel to Gremlins.
In the first season of the animated “Gremlins” series, George Takei’s character is brought to life when Sam inadvertently gets Gizmo wet, causing additional mogwai to emerge and eventually transforming into a green Gremlin. The character known as Noggin assumes a significant antagonistic role throughout the series after consuming a magical elixir that grants him human-like speech and extraordinary intelligence. During an interview with the “Gremlins” producers, Brendan Hay shared his excitement about collaborating with Takei for the upcoming season using these sentiments:
George Takei has been an absolute pleasure to work with! I’ve always admired the character Joe’s Brain Gremlin [Noggin] from Gremlins 2, so it was a dream come true to have the chance to reinterpret or pay tribute to that role. Just getting to do that was already rewarding, but then having George voice it made it even better! Noggin is such an over-the-top character, yet he brings so much emotion and weight to his performance. This allows us to explore more dimensions of the character this season, as his acting really gives Noggin a rich and vibrant life.
Wow, what a clever tribute to the classic sequel of “Gremlins”! The title of this season of “The Wild Batch”, being “The New Batch”, is reminiscent of the 1990 sequel that remains hilarious even after 30 years. Interestingly, the creator also intends to borrow elements from the sequel for the primary antagonist. Intriguingly, one of the Gremlins in this sequel, known as “Brain”, is transformed with a refined speech and an interest in human culture. The antagonist in this new season, however, is a small suit-wearing character named Noggin who uses his intellectual prowess to command an army of Gremlins. Our beloved characters Sam, Gizmo, and Elle must then figure out a way to put a stop to him. As Hay further explained:
We can actually take a whole side episode to just focus on what is this character’s life experience. Because it dawned on us in the writer’s room, it’s a really weird position to be the smartest evil mogwai. So it’s like, what is that? What is the pathos? And the more time we spent with him, we all felt sympathy and empathy for him. So we wanted to bring that across the screen while still having him be the engine of a lot of problems for our heroes. So, the one thing I’ll say is the front half of the season is really all largely based around San Francisco as Chinatown. The back half is us getting out of the city to see more of the Wild West and kind of further explore the mystery of Elle’s mom and everything that’s going on there.
As a passionate gamer, I’m pumped to share that the initial five episodes of the latest season for “The Wild Batch” are now available for streaming on Max! The second half of the season is yet to be announced, but rest assured, it’s on its way. Alongside George Takei’s significant role, Ming-Na Wen and BD Wong portray Sam’s parents, James Hong lends his voice to Grandpa, and Simu Liu joins us this season as Chang. I find myself thoroughly impressed by the casting of this show. It’s fascinating that often our mental images of a person don’t match their actual appearance. For instance, when you hear a DJ, you might have a certain image in your mind, but when you see them, it can be surprising. However, in this case, each voice fits the characters so well that it seems impossible to imagine them any other way. I believe the success of the casting is largely due to the producers’ deep understanding of their characters and their actors. In my opinion, they’ve done an exceptional job with the casting.
During an interview with TopMob, the producers of the movie “Gremlins” reminisced with Dante about Steven Spielberg’s crucial role in the franchise’s triumph.
