Greta Gerwig Isn’t Sure We Need a Barbie Sequel

Greta Gerwig Isn't Sure We Need a Barbie Sequel

As a lifelong Barbie enthusiast who grew up playing with these iconic dolls, I was absolutely thrilled when Greta Gerwig’s take on the beloved character hit the big screen in 2023. The movie was a visual feast that perfectly captured the whimsy and magic of the Barbie universe, all while delivering a thought-provoking story that resonated with audiences worldwide.

2023 saw the global sensation of the Barbie movie, masterfully directed by Greta Gerwig. The film, starring Margot Robbie as Barbie, gained international acclaim and had people of all ages captivated. The movie’s extravagant pink sets even led to a temporary shortage of pink paint in stores nationwide. Despite the massive success of the film, both critically and commercially, Gerwig has hinted that there might not be a sequel, potentially leaving some fans a tad disappointed.

In a recent conversation with 60 Minutes, Greta Gerwig was inquired about potentially directing another Barbie film. Since Gerwig has never handled a sequel throughout her career, she shared that she’s not eager to begin with Barbie 2. The director expressed enthusiasm for creating movies of a similar genre, specifically those based on well-known intellectual properties, provided she’s allowed the creative liberty to craft her unique narrative, just like she did with Barbie. However, she wishes to steer clear of a sequel that appears to be solely driven by profit. Gerwig put it this way: “I’m not interested in a sequel that merely aims for quick money.”

“What if we could create a fresh, daring concept instead, with a renowned director, substantial funding, and the backing of a massive corporation? That’s what I’m aiming for.”

Greta Gerwig Is Undecided About a Barbie Sequel

Greta Gerwig’s position regarding a possible sequel for the movie ‘Barbie’ has left some viewers perplexed. Initially, when the film was released and achieved great success at the box office alongside Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’, Gerwig showed hesitation about reprising her role. However, earlier this year, Gerwig expressed openness to the idea of returning for a potential sequel. After Ryan Gosling delivered an exceptional live rendition of “I’m Just Ken” at the 96th Academy Awards in March, Gerwig stated that she is no longer resisting the allure of directing a sequel, merely stating that she’s not actively resisting it.

“I’m not dismissing it, I want to do it.”

Despite initially expressing apprehension about “Barbie 2”, it appears Greta Gerwig’s stance may have shifted back. Regardless of her future plans, it seems almost certain that a Barbie sequel or spinoff will materialize at some point. Given the massive success of the original film surpassing $1 billion at the box office, it’s highly unusual for such a movie not to become a franchise. Interestingly, the Barbie universe is already expanding without Gerwig’s direct involvement. In fact, Mattel announced plans for several spinoffs based on various iterations of the iconic character following the film’s release in 2023. As revealed by Ynon Kreiz, CEO of Mattel, these spinoffs are now under development.

“Barbie, as a trademark, encompasses numerous variations. The product range of Barbie is expansive, stretching far beyond the primary doll. Alongside the main Barbie figure, she has a family, and various aspects within her world. This universe is incredibly rich… It’s a versatile brand with a wide array of possibilities.”

Regarding Greta Gerwig, her filmmaking journey continues towards a well-liked series, specifically a Netflix adaptation of the “Chronicles of Narnia” novels by C.S. Lewis that she is currently working on as director. It’s worth mentioning that Gerwig is not only a director but also an actor, and she will be appearing in Noah Baumbach’s upcoming (still unnamed) film.
