Grey’s Anatomy elegantly balances a perfect love story with pending tragedy

Note: This review discloses key plot points from the seventeenth episode of Grey’s Anatomy season 21, titled “Love You Like a Love Song.” Proceed with caution if you wish to avoid spoilers.

In a smooth and natural rephrasing: When it comes to weddings on Grey’s Anatomy, they usually do a fantastic job. The recent episode is no exception, as Jo and Link, who have been friends for a long time and are also expecting parents, finally tie the knot. Meanwhile, as the wedding preparations continue, there’s a lot of stress at Grey Sloan Memorial due to other reasons.

The heartfelt reunion between Jo and Link’s mom provided a welcome softening of her hardened persona, and it was pleasant to see character interactions without constant references to her upcoming twins. Moreover, the brief resurrection of Levi in Jo’s storyline deserves applause; while we all hope for his permanent return, such an outcome seems improbable given the abundance of characters moving in and out of these story arcs. However, there’s always a chance…

It seems that every season finale, Grey’s Anatomy appears to subtly hint at multiple cast members leaving the show. As we approach the final episode of Season 21, it’s looking like Amelia and Lucas might be among those departing, either through a dramatic exit or otherwise. The number of ‘vacations’ for Owen and Teddy lately has raised some eyebrows, leading to speculation about their possible exit. Keep an eye out for more updates on this later in the week.

Currently, Amelia appears to be the one most likely to depart among the two main characters. The series seems uncertain about how to handle her character anymore. Following her latest (and arguably unnecessary and heartbreaking) breakup and taking on a secondary role in Meredith’s Alzheimer’s research, she has mainly functioned as a mentor for Simone and Lucas. Given that she’s now a significant figure in the show’s current three-episode arc, it seems logical to consider writing her off the show at this point. Despite my dislike of such an outcome, the reality is that there are too many characters and not enough new plotlines to accommodate them all effectively.

The split between Simone and Lucas might just be a distraction from the real plot development. It appears the writers are leading us to believe they will part ways, but perhaps a looming predicament may bring them back together instead. I’m not entirely sure about Winston and Jules; they seem ideal for each other, yet they struggle with their relationship. As for Teddy and Owen, their drama continues without end. I’d prefer to see Teddy venture far and wide to rescue Nora, thereby concluding their tale by allowing Owen to be with her. However, the storyline could also take a turn for the worse. What if, instead of trying to save Nora, Teddy is consumed by jealousy over Owen’s feelings for her?

Regardless of the path chosen, they’re in trouble. It seems unlikely that the writers would repeatedly drive these characters towards a split and then reunite them… again. Frankly, I’m growing weary of it; it’s no longer enjoyable. These two characters were more appealing as friends than they are as romantic partners.

Fortunately for Jo and Link, it’s not something that has been hinted about them, namely their musical talents. It’s possible that my memory is hazy due to the passage of time since I last watched their earlier seasons, so perhaps I simply forgot. I’m glad that Jo received the kind of vows she deserved, and it seems they might finally experience lasting happiness for a prolonged period, which would be refreshing given the current state of relationships on this show (with the exception of Miranda and Ben, maybe? Plus Meredith and Nick), where enduring romance appears to be a rarity, much like the longevity of other relationships in the series. It’s possible that another character will soon experience the same fate as those whose relationships have failed.

The Season 21 finale of Grey’s Anatomy premieres this Thursday on ABC.
