Grey’s Anatomy Star Reveals Filming Challenges After Major Cast Exits

Over the course of 21 seasons on “Grey’s Anatomy“, there have been numerous actors joining and leaving the show. The initial part of Season 21 witnessed a major shift in cast members, with Jake Borelli’s character Levi Schmitt and Midori Francis’ Mika Yasuda departing Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. Schmitt chose to take up a job offer elsewhere, while Yasuda found it difficult to continue working at a hospital where her sister passed away. Concurrently, Jason George’s Ben Warren returned to the show after the cancellation of “Station 19”, and he spoke about his experience following these two exits.

At the start of Season 21, Ben returned to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital to resume his surgical residency, having grown tired of firefighting. Since then, he’s been spending a considerable amount of time with his fellow interns, including Yasuda, and has also reconnected with Schmitt. However, as the series progresses on its 2025 TV schedule, he’s experiencing the consequences of their departures, as George explained to TV Insider.

I was gradually becoming familiar with her, but then she left, altering the dynamics. As I was getting acquainted with the entire intern class, their group dynamic was unexpectedly shifting. I was finding my footing again, and just when I did, everything changed once more around me.

Ben’s journey towards becoming a doctor hasn’t been smooth sailing, given the numerous hurdles he’s had to overcome along the way. Additionally, being married to Bailey at medical school isn’t always advantageous; it often sets him apart unfavorably among his peers. However, making connections with his fellow interns has proven beneficial for him.

Without Yasuda present, it seems challenging for him. Moreover, with Schmitt departing, that leaves one fewer familiar and amicable person for Ben.

As a die-hard fan of Grey’s Anatomy, I must admit that character exits and comebacks are as common as surgeries in the O.R. Now, about Yasuda, it seems like her return might be on hold for some time, maybe even indefinitely given the challenges. But hey, you never know with Schmitt! He just might pop up again in a future episode or two. Who knows, perhaps we’ll catch them on a video call before that happens!

Disney Plus and Hulu Bundle Deal: Originally offered last year but arriving 9 months earlier in 2025, this sensational deal returns in March. For only $2.99 a month, you can access the ad-supported Disney Plus and Hulu plan – that’s a massive 72% discount from its regular price of $10.99. Although new and returning customers won’t keep the low rate for as long, they will still benefit from this sub-$3 bundle offer during the initial four months of their subscription (during Black Friday, the reduced Disney Plus price was valid for an entire year).

Even though Schmitt and Yasuda might not reappear, Dr. Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, occasionally pops up in the show after leaving as a main character during Season 19. Furthermore, her voiceovers at the start and end of episodes continue, ensuring that we hear her even if she’s not present on screen every week. This means that while her physical presence may be limited, her voice remains an integral part of the series, which is more than just nothing.

In addition to reintroducing popular characters like Dr. Addison Montgomery (played by Kate Walsh) and Dr. Arizona Robbins (portrayed by Jessica Capshaw), the series has hinted at potential returns for characters such as Schmitt and Yasuda. Therefore, it’s not entirely out of the question that they might make a comeback.

It’ll be intriguing to watch how events unfold now that Schmit and Yasuda are no longer around, particularly after the tense midseason premiere. Catch the latest episodes of Grey’s Anatomy every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on ABC, or if you’re a Hulu subscriber, stream them the following day.
