- Engaging turn-based combat
- Familiar hero summons system
- A beautiful and grim fantasy world
As an old-time gamer with years of turn-based strategy games under my belt, Grimguard Tactics has certainly piqued my interest. The combination of engaging combat, a familiar hero summons system, and a beautifully grim fantasy world has got me hooked from the get-go.
In Grimguard Tactics, you’re introduced to a fresh, turn-based role-playing game experience where you face off against the formidable beings called the Primorva. As you progress, you’ll gather an array of potent champions and enhance their abilities to take on these mighty adversaries in captivating turn-based encounters.
Grimguard Tactics Pits You Against Ancient Evils
Grimguard Tactics
offers a fun if somewhat traditional storyline about an ancient evil breaking free of its prison. The Primorva were the original inhabitants of the world of Terenos and embodied basic feelings, including hunger and lust.
Originally imprisoned by a group of renowned heroes known as Dawnseekers, the Primorva broke free from the Umbral plane, much to the distress of the populace, as they grew even more fearsome. To make matters worse, these beasts have the power to turn the innocent people of Terenos into their twisted followers. The game world is characterized by a dark aesthetic, with its rich colors contributing to an eerie atmosphere.
Combat in Grimguard Tactics
Each battle takes place on a grid. Some battles only let you send up to three heroes. However, most allow you to deploy up to five. Every hero in your party gets a turn each round, and it’s up to you whether they use a buff or their basic or special attack. To use a basic attack, tap once on an enemy to choose them as your target, then a second time to confirm the action.
Each character possesses a unique move that appears in the lower right corner on the screen. For example, Merc’s shockwave skill allows him to strike enemies behind your chosen target all at once, with a powerful sword swing. As you might guess, these moves require some time to recharge, so using them wisely is crucial for emerging victorious in challenging fights.
Besides attacking enemies, you can also interact with obstacles to remove them from your path, break exploding barrels to damage nearby foes, and collect green orbs that heal your party. The grid layout also changes from battle to battle, keeping combat fresh and intriguing.
Recruiting Heroes in Grimguard Tactics
There’s a typical recruitment mechanic for unlocking new heroes. To recruit a new hero, you’ll need a contract. Recruits come in four tiers: Militia, Veteran Militia, Heroes, and Legendary Heroes. Each recruit is aligned either to Chaos, Order, or Might. Chaos-aligned warriors are strong against Might-aligned heroes, Might is strong against Order, and Order is more potent against Chaos. Be sure to use alignments strategically in battle to deal devastating damage.
Dungeon and Arena Battles
Beyond the main story, you can also head over to the Dungeon to participate in tiered battles. See how many rounds you can last before your team falls. Dungeon battles give you the opportunity to earn tons of rewards, and unlike typical battles, you won’t need energy to participate in them.
As you advance deeper into Act 2, you’ll unlock the opportunity to enter the Arena. In this Arena, you can challenge other players by sending five of your heroes against their team. Victories in these battles boost your rank, while defeats lower it. If you manage to secure a place among the top 50 ranked players in the Arena, your name will be showcased on the Leaderboard of Top Players.
Grimguard Tactics is an engaging Role-Playing Game (RPG) that provides straightforward yet enjoyable combat and a wide variety of heroes to enlist. You’ll find pleasure in enhancing and promoting your heroes between fights as you engage enemies within the Dungeon. Although this new RPG doesn’t bring any groundbreaking, innovative mechanics, it delivers an immersive role-playing experience.
