As an ardent follower of Guillermo del Toro‘s cinematic journey, I find his recent escapades in Aberdeen nothing short of intriguing. Known for weaving tales that send shivers down our spines while stirring our souls, it seems the master of horror is now a victim of his own craft. His latest Twitter posts about staying at an allegedly haunted hotel and feeling an “oppressive” presence in the room are reminiscent of the eerie atmospheres he meticulously crafts for us on the big screen.
Acclaimed for crafting some of the most haunting movies in history, it’s no surprise that Guillermo del Toro, himself, feels a chill. This is made clear by a string of recent posts on social media from the director. Renowned for his work on masterpieces such as Pan’s Labyrinth, Crimson Peak, and The Shape of Water, del Toro has earned a reputation as one of the most talented filmmakers today. His ability to intertwine fantasy and horror in a way that leaves us simultaneously awestruck and apprehensive is unparalleled.
On August 20, Del Toro announced on X (previously Twitter) that he was residing at an antique hotel in Aberdeen, Scotland. True to form, he took up the most haunted room, and though he reported no unusual events at the time, his stay in the room was facilitated due to a producer’s sudden departure following some mysterious electrical and physical occurrences.
A few days on, del Toro provided the anticipated update on his situation. He explained that he had chosen to avoid sleeping in the room due to a sense of it being overwhelmingly heavy or oppressive. To perform optimally on set, he requires a solid six hours of sleep for an ideal shooting day. Although no supernatural events occurred, he maintains that there is something present in the room with him.
It might be beneficial for the filmmaker to perform a purification ritual before he departs Scotland, just to ensure that no unwanted entities tag along. We wouldn’t want him encountering mischievous creatures meddling with his plane’s engines in mid-flight, as happened to John Lithgow in Twilight Zone: The Movie.
Guillermo del Toro Is Set to Bring His Own Version of Frankenstein to Life
I’ve had the privilege of journeying to Aberdeen lately, and the purpose behind my visit ties directly to the upcoming release of my next masterpiece, “Frankenstein.” Filming concluded in Toronto earlier this year for us, but the remainder of the movie is now set to be shot in both Scotland and London. The production is scheduled to continue until October.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve long been captivated by the idea of revisiting Mary Shelley’s classic tale, “Frankenstein.” Guillermo del Toro has harbored this dream since as far back as 2007, and it wasn’t until his multi-year partnership with Netflix in 2023 that this ambitious project finally saw the light of day. Names like Doug Jones and Benedict Cumberbatch were tossed around over the years for the role of The Monster in del Toro’s gothic reinvention, but it was Jacob Elordi who ultimately landed the part. Oscar Isaac is slated to portray Dr. Victor Frankenstein, with Mia Goth and Christoph Waltz also joining the cast.
2025 looks promising as I eagerly anticipate the Netflix premiere of Guillermo del Toro’s take on “Frankenstein”. Fingers crossed that he manages to steer clear of any paranormal obstacles during production. The last thing anyone would want is for this movie to end up featured in an episode of Shudder’s “Cursed Films” due to unforeseen setbacks. As updates on the project, such as a release date and trailer, surface, I’ll be sure to keep you posted.
