As reported by Deadline, Robert Downey Jr.’s Instagram post announcing his comeback in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Victor Von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom, amassed over 122,000 comments and 12.6 million likes within a day. The majority of responses were enthusiastic, but Gwyneth Paltrow, Downey’s previous Avengers colleague, appeared taken aback and puzzled.
On Saturday afternoons at San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel’s Kevin Feige introduced the Russo Brothers to the crowd in Hall H, confirming their comeback to the MCU since “Avengers: Endgame.” The surprising announcement followed as they unveiled the new title for the fifth Avengers movie, formerly known as “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty,” now called “Avengers: Doomsday.” To add more excitement, Downey was revealed to be Doctor Doom. In the comic books, Tony Stark has assumed the role of Doctor Doom in various universes. Why Did the MCU Bring in Doctor Doom?
As a dedicated gamer and avid fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I can’t help but notice that things haven’t been quite right since the epic conclusion of “Endgame.” Some movies and Disney+ series just didn’t hit the mark, leaving both critics and fans underwhelmed. Consequently, disappointing box office numbers have followed. In an attempt to reignite the magic, Marvel seems to be borrowing a page from the playbooks of “Deadpool,” “Wolverine,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” By introducing familiar faces as new Marvel characters through the multiverse, they’re hoping to tap into that nostalgic vein.
In the MCU planning, Kang, portrayed by Majors, was slated to become the major antagonist in the multiverse. Notably, Majors was scheduled to depict this role in both “Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania” and “Loki”. However, following Majors’ conviction for domestic violence, Marvel altered their plans and discarded both him and the character from their stories.
Downey, who is slated to portray Doom in “Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars,” remains undecided about making an appearance in “Fantastic Four.” Given his strong ties to Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal) and the Fantastic Four team, this decision carries significant implications.
