In one of cinema’s most cherished roles, Paddington the bear remains a fan favorite, but even he has adversaries. With Paddington in Peru making its U.S. debut following its U.K. release, a group of cybercriminals has opted to target our furry friend. Recent reports suggest that the original Paddington Bear is being held hostage for ransom, adding another layer of concern to an already troubling world situation.
According to The Sun’s report, it appears that the hacker group Rhysida has allegedly taken hold of confidential information from The Agency, which manages the Paddington Bear franchise and the estate of its creator, Michael Bond. The specific nature of this sensitive data isn’t clear yet, but it seems they chose not to comply with the ransom demand and instead contacted the authorities. In a message to their staff, the company stated that “We have implemented security measures for our systems and are giving them top priority,” but admitted there’s a “likelihood” some data might have been compromised at some point.
It’s crucial that the stolen information doesn’t pose a significant threat to Paddington Bear or the ongoing success of his movie franchise. Most likely, the data breach involves the personal details of the company’s employees and human clients (no offense meant to Paddington), such as the family of Michael Bond. If Paddington could decide, a couple of marmalade sandwiches might just suffice to compensate for the loss of confidential information. In fact, a new Paddington film that features our beloved bear in a tense hostage scenario might be exactly what the series needs to breathe some freshness and innovation into it.
So… Is ‘Paddington 4’ in the Works?
Regardless of the recent data breach and ransom incident, the longevity of the beloved Paddington franchise remains robust. In fact, not only is a fourth movie in production following Paddington’s brief adventure in Peru, but a new television series is also underway. While details about whether it will be part of the same cinematic universe are scarce, the Paddington Bear brand is broadening its horizons across various platforms. StudioCanal CEO Anna Marsh hinted at the future of the Paddington series:
A fourth movie is in the works, and we’re brainstorming ideas for future films. In addition to that, we are developing a new TV series and collaborating with Sonia Friedman and Eliza Lumley on a stage show musical.
The latest installment of the Paddington series, titled “Paddington in Peru“, might have a lower rating on Rotten Tomatoes compared to others, but with an impressive 94% “Certified Fresh” rating from critics, it’s challenging to dismiss that the franchise is running out of momentum. With numerous upcoming projects planned, Paddington will return to cinemas following its fresh creative team and supporting cast in the last film. Until the fourth movie arrives, fans can watch the critically-acclaimed sequel “Paddington 2” for free on streaming service Tubi.
