Two individuals, suspected of being hackers, were apprehended following accusations that they illegally obtained numerous tickets for Taylor Swift’s “The Eras Tour” and other significant concerts.
According to Deadline, Tyrone Rose and Shamara P. Simmons from Queens, New York are being charged for allegedly selling up to 900 digital concert tickets, with many of these being from Taylor Swift’s historic tour. The duo is said to have made over $600,000 USD in a year through this activity. Among the other events they sold tickets for were concerts by Adele and Ed Sheeran, NBA games, and the US Open Tennis Championships.
As stated by Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, these defendants are accused of taking advantage of Taylor Swift‘s popular concert tour and other high-profile events to make money at the expense of others. They are said to have found a way around the system through an offshore ticket seller in order to steal tickets for one of the biggest tours of the last decade, which they later resold for a substantial profit exceeding $600,000.
Katz found evidence suggesting that two workers at a StubHub subcontractor based in Kingston, Jamaica were accused of wrongfully obtaining ticket URLs. These URLs were reportedly sent to two accomplices in Jamaica, Queens. Upon receiving the URLs, they downloaded the tickets and proceeded to sell them on StubHub for their own profit.
Rose and Simmons stand accused of grand larceny in the second degree, first degree computer tampering, and conspiracy at both the fourth degree level, with potential penalties ranging from three to 15 years in prison. According to Deadline, the District Attorney’s office is actively pursuing further investigation to uncover additional co-conspirators and fully understand the scope of the operation.
