Hackers Strike Again! Watcher Guru Account Compromised

Oh dear, oh dear! It seems like the crypto world has been rocked by another hacking scandal! 🤯 Watcher Guru, a popular crypto news and updates media platform, has had its X account breached by a sneaky hacker! 🤖

The platform, which has a whopping 3 million social media followers, warned its fans that a hacker has taken control of the account and posted some rather… interesting… updates. The team is still trying to figure out how this happened, despite having 2FA enabled and taking “extreme measures” to avoid hacks.

WARNING: Our X account has been hacked and the previous post (now deleted) was posted by a hacker.

We have 2FA enabled and have taken extreme measures to avoid hacks.

We are looking into this and will provide an update when we have more details. We are working to get in touch…

It all started on March 21, at around 2:05 AM UTC, when the hacker uploaded a rather… dubious… post claiming that payment firm SWIFT was close to securing an agreement with Ripple to use XRP for cross-border payments. However, the team quickly clarified that this was not their doing, but rather a hacker’s handiwork.

The hacker’s post was so convincing that it even made its way to Watcher Guru’s Telegram, Facebook, and Discord channels, thanks to a sneaky bot that automatically reposts all X account updates. But fear not, dear readers! The team has since removed all unauthorized posts and secured their account.

How did the hacker get in? 🤔

The team suspects that the hack was related to a fake X link sent to their Telegram account on March 5. The link was “formatted in a strange way” because it had a “token” query string that doesn’t normally appear in X links. The team thought nothing of it at first, but sent a message to X’s head of Cyber Security just in case. Oops!

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time this has happened to a crypto-focused news outlet. DB News also fell victim to a similar hack, despite having 2FA enabled. Talk about a security fail! 🤦‍♂️

At press time, Watcher Guru stated that they still can’t determine the exact source or method behind the hack. But don’t worry, they’re working on it and will provide an update when they have more details.

And on a final note, it’s worth mentioning that this isn’t the first time hackers have targeted X accounts to promote memecoins. In February, the Instagram account of luxury brand Dior was hacked to promote a fake Solana (SOL)-based Dior memecoin, which reached a $280,000 market cap before crashing 90% after the post was deleted. Talk about a wild ride! 🎢
