As a seasoned veteran of gaming, with memories of Half-Life’s exhilarating storylines etched deeply into my grey matter, I find myself standing at attention, ready to salute the prospect of a new installment. The tantalizing whispers of “White Sands” and “HLX” have been echoing through the corridors of the gaming world for years now, and I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu.
Prepare your posts, everyone! It seems that long-awaited development might be underway. Valve has a knack for keeping us guessing about games that may never materialize, but there’s still a flicker of expectation for Half-Life 3. After more than 17 years since the release of Half-Life 2: Episode Two, could we finally witness a worthy successor?
Although Episode 3 along with Borealis and the expected Half-Life 3 in 2013 failed to materialize, we were gratefully given Half-Life: Alyx in 2020, which was only available in VR. Alyx wasn’t quite satisfying in fulfilling our anticipation for a new Half-Life game, and even after all these years have passed, we continue to hope for a genuine third installment.
Half-Life 3 rumoured to be in development
Tyler McVicker (previously Valve News Network) claims the “White Sands” project is Half-Life 3, and is related to the ‘HLX’ codename found in datamined files over the past few years.

The situation escalated when voice actor Natasha Chandel mentioned a secretive video game titled “Project White Sands” on her website. While she didn’t disclose the character she was voicing, it was obvious that this was a game developed by Valve. Adding more intrigue to the matter, she has since taken down all mentions of White Sands from her site.
In other news, Tyler McVicker (previously associated with Valve News Network) recently shared a video hypothesis suggesting that White Sands could be a location in Half-Life 3. McVicker has compiled all the latest data mining information, proposing that a project known as HLX might be Half-Life 3, possibly being under development for the last three years.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed an interesting connection: White Sands in New Mexico shares the same location as Black Mesa. McVicker points out that Half-Life X (HLX) is a standalone, non-VR single-player game, featuring the Main Character (MVP) donning a HEV suit. If that doesn’t scream the comeback of Gordon Freeman, nothing does.
It appears that gamers are embracing the concept this time around – largely due to tangible proof rather than unsubstantiated gossip. While some fans expressed excitement with the comment, “If by some miracle we receive leaks for Half-Life 3 before GTA 6, we’ll be living in an utterly peculiar era,” a skeptic countered, “I won’t believe anything about Half-Life 3 until I can physically hold its release in my hands.”
Although HLX and White Sands might be referring to the same project, it doesn’t necessarily mean we’re getting Half-Life 3. Previously, we hypothesized that HLX could be a sequel to Alyx, given Valve’s apparent discomfort with the number three. Currently, Valve is developing Deadlock, but it appears more probable that something connected to Half-Life is in development as well.
