Having witnessed Berry’s mesmerizing performance in movies like “Monster’s Ball,” which earned her an Oscar, it’s hard to reconcile the fact that she graced us with one of the worst superhero films of all time.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, she admitted, “I’ve always known that Catwoman’s role was a soft superhero journey.” Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe can be grateful for their franchises’ consistency, even amidst recent disappointments like The Marvels, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and Eternals. However, French filmmaker Pitof’s interpretation of Catwoman remains one of the poorest attempts at a superhero movie in history. As we mark the 20th anniversary of this DC Comics adaptation, Berry reflects on her experience.
I, Halle Berry, won the Best Actress Oscar for my role in “Monster’s Ball” back in 2004, only three short years before taking on the challenge of bringing Catwoman to life on set. During a recent interview, I shared some insights about that experience.
Based on my own experiences and perspective, I can relate to the feeling of having a project go smoothly and enjoying every moment of it. It’s always a great feeling when things come together and you’re fully immersed in your work. In this case, the person seems to have put a lot of effort into portraying a cat character, both psychologically and physically, and was rewarded with a successful shoot.
From Oscar Winner to Razzies Recipient
The movie “Catwoman” (2004), featuring Halle Berry as the title character, is widely regarded as one of the worst superhero films ever made. Critics heavily criticized this film, giving it a low score of 8% on the Tomatometer. Even fans have been unforgiving, with the film’s audience score on Rotten Tomatoes currently at just 18%. Although Berry acknowledges that the plot had its flaws during an interview, fans were also disappointed by her portrayal of Catwoman’s appearance in the comic books.
Fans expressed disappointment about the new Catwoman costume. But in our perspective, why create another Catwoman if not to innovate and offer a fresh take on the character? For me, this unique design better aligned with my interpretation of her, my physicality, and my personal style.
As a gamer, I can’t help but feel disappointed when a highly anticipated movie fails to live up to expectations. And the 2004 Catwoman film was no exception – it drew the ire of fans and critics alike. But it wasn’t just the movie that faced backlash; my favorite actress, Halle Berry, took the brunt of the criticism for her portrayal of Patience Phillips, aka Catwoman. In fact, her performance earned her the Razzie Award for Worst Actress in 2005! Halle herself admitted to the disappointment, saying:
As a Black woman, I’m no stranger to facing adversity and dealing with negativity. I’ve learned to keep pushing forward despite the challenges and prove doubters wrong. Although I didn’t enjoy the backlash, I picked up that Razzie award, found the humor in the situation, and continued moving forward.
Surprisingly, Halle Berry’s role in “Catwoman” lands close to the top of MovieWeb’s list of her best performances. However, it’s challenging to accept that this film outshines her work in movies like “Gothika” and the “X-Men” series based on most critics and fans’ opinions.
