As a fan who has grown up with the X-Men franchise and witnessed the evolution of superhero movies, I can wholeheartedly appreciate Halle Berry’s sentiments towards playing Storm. Her words resonate deeply as a person of color who has felt marginalized at times, and it was truly inspiring to see her embody such a powerful mutant hero on the big screen.
The 2000s began with the first of the X-Men movies starring Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry and so forth. It would help usher in a continued popular trend of upcoming superhero movies that feels like it only grows every year. As Berry’s time as Storm continues to be one of the most pivotal roles of her career, the actress spoke to what playing this character meant to her on a deeper level.
The Important Reason Why Halle Berry Wanted To Play Storm
Speaking with Wired prior to her roles in two forthcoming films, Halle Berry shared her thoughts on what made the character Ororo Munroe so significant to her personally. To quote her directly:
I really loved playing Storm. You know, being in the world of the X-Men and mutants was always really important to me, because being a woman of color, I have often felt on the outside of things. I’ve often felt marginalized and overlooked and unseen, and that’s what the X-Men were all about. These mutants finding their voice and finding a way to be seen and appreciated for who they really were. And as a Black woman, I really related to that. So it was fun to put on the skin of Storm, to fly, and to be part of that kind of storytelling. I thought it was really important.
Although Black women have increasingly taken center stage in superhero films like the 2022 release “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” Halle Berry’s portrayal of a popular Black superheroine in the 2000 film “X-Men” marked one of the earliest instances. Regrettably, the number of Black women who have played superheroes on the big screen remains limited, with Teyonah Parris’ character from “The Marvels” being the most recent addition to this exclusive group.
In 1975, Storm was originally conceptualized by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, being a descendant of powerful African witch-priestesses and one of the strongest mutants to date. The part was highly coveted, given that Vivica A. Fox was also in contention for the role. Regardless, she is now indelibly linked with Storm as the first actress to portray her on screen.

The actress was absent from the cameos in the summer blockbuster featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, but this week she revealed that Ryan Reynolds’ wife, Blake Lively, had asked her about returning for the Deadpool movie. Berry reportedly showed interest to Lively (as she has mentioned previously), but stated that she didn’t receive a call from Reynolds.
Hello, just because it hasn’t been confirmed yet that Hugh Jackman will continue as Logan until he’s 90, it doesn’t automatically mean that Storm won’t return. Given the significance of the role to Halle Berry and countless Black women who admired her portrayal of a strong mutant hero in four movies, it seems reasonable to hope for her comeback.
