Hallmark’s Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story Was Cute, But As A Fan, It Didn’t Feel Like A Christmas Movie

As a die-hard fan of all things Hallmark and Christmas, I must confess that I approached Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story with a healthy dose of skepticism. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good football movie, but when it comes to my favorite season, I expect a certain level of holiday cheer.

Admit openly that Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story, one of Hallmark’s highly anticipated Christmas films, wasn’t among my most eagerly awaited Countdown to Christmas movies. Despite this, I chose to watch the football-themed film. To clarify, the romance was endearing, it offered a heartwarming love story, and Donna Kelce’s acting debut was impressive. However, it didn’t seem like a traditional Christmas movie to me, which left me a bit disappointed.

Titled “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story”, the plot revolves around Alana (portrayed by Hunter King), an ardent Kansas City Chiefs enthusiast who assists her family in managing a store specializing in team merchandise. In a bid to win the Fan of the Year contest organized by the team, she submits a heartfelt narrative about a magical hat one of her family members dons during every Chiefs game on Christmas day. This hat, as legend has it, brings them luck and helps secure a spot in the Super Bowl. It’s Derrick (Tyler Hynes), the Director of Fan Engagement, who is assigned to assess Alana’s story. Initially, he harbors some doubts about the superstition behind the hat.

Yet, as he invests progressively more moments with the family, particularly Alana, he gradually discards his doubts. Unfortunately, calamity ensues when the hat mysteriously vanishes, putting Alana’s family’s standing and the Chief’s chances for the Super Bowl at risk.

Before watching this movie, I recognized that it might not be tailored for someone like me, given my lack of interest in football and limited knowledge about the Kansas City Chiefs, which is mostly due to Travis Kelce’s connection with Taylor Swift. Still, I’ve found myself drawn to other Hallmark Christmas Movies without immediate appeal, so I decided to give it a chance.

Initially, I was captivated by the romantic connection between Alana and Derrick, and I rejoiced at their fairytale ending. Yet, as the movie progressed, my satisfaction waned due to the apparent neglect of the character Christmas.

It’s no secret that Hallmark has perfected the Christmas movie formula over the years. It’s one of the reasons I love these movies so much because I always know what I’m getting myself into when I settle in on the couch to watch.

Lacey Chabert Disclosed the Distinction Between Shooting Hallmark and Netflix Christmas Flicks, and Her Response Piques My Interest to Watch Even More of Them.

Over the past few years, I’ve noticed a shift in their storytelling approach, introducing younger characters and emphasizing platonic relationships over romantic ones. Frankly, I find this refreshing change quite delightful, as it infuses a new perspective into some of my favorite holiday movies. At its core, they continue to celebrate the Christmas season and its cherished customs.

In contrast to most Hallmark-style films, Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story, does not seem to embody the traditional festive atmosphere that one might expect. Although Santa made an appearance and a Christmas miracle occurred when Alana’s lost hat was found moments before kickoff, the movie lacked the typical holiday sparkle common in such productions.

In this movie, unlike typical ones where a character must give up their urban lifestyle to move to a quaint town and find romance or attend a tree-lighting ceremony, Alana and Derrick merely went ice skating and had a quick exchange of gifts among the family. However, rather than concentrating on these romantic or festive elements, the story primarily emphasized the deep-rooted love the family has for their sports team, which has shaped them over generations.

From my perspective, the movie might have been more engaging if it had been set during the playoff or even Super Bowl season. If Hallmark had released it a week before the big game, they could have potentially launched an exciting series of football-themed romance movies. Unfortunately, we ended up with a film categorized as a Christmas movie, as that’s when the story unfolds.

This year, Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story might not be my top pick among Hallmark’s Christmas movies. Still, many enthusiasts found pleasure in watching it, and the numerous appearances of Kansas City Chiefs-related personalities added a unique charm.

In case you didn’t get a chance to watch it earlier, here’s some great news! The movie titled “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story” will be rebroadcasted on Wednesday, December 4th at 8 p.m. ET on the Hallmark Channel.
