As a researcher with years of experience in the digital gaming and blockchain industry, I have witnessed numerous projects rise and fall. The decline of Hamster Kombat, from a whopping 300 million users to just 41 million active ones in a matter of months, is indeed an alarming trend. The drastic drop in user base and the plummeting value of its primary token, HMSTR, by 76% since its market debut in September, paints a grim picture for this once-popular game.
The user base of the hit tap-to-earn game Hamster Kombat on Telegram has significantly decreased, going from 300 million users in August to just 41 million active ones. This translates to a massive loss of 259 million users between August and November. Furthermore, its main token, HMSTR, initially priced at $0.009993 on the market starting September 26, has dropped by a staggering 76% to reach only $0.002392 as of now.
The decline of Hamster Kombat can be attributed to a significantly underwhelming airdrop and token launch, which sparked widespread dissatisfaction among users who criticized the developers for overhyping their project by setting unattainable goals. In early 2021, Telegram CEO Pavel Durov labeled Hamster Kombat as “the fastest-expanding digital service globally.
Furthermore, he emphasized that it belongs to an emerging trend of small applications aimed at making blockchain technology user-friendly for the broader community.
Between Hamster Kombat and Nigeria
A lot of debate has arisen due to the distribution of tokens on this platform. The Vanguard highlighted dissatisfaction among Nigerian gamers, who have invested significant time in playing the game for multiple months, yet can only sell the HMSTR tokens for small amounts.
In response to cheating concerns, the management of the game instituted an anti-cheat system. This move resulted in the banning of approximately 2.3 million players and the confiscation of around 6.8 billion HMSTR tokens. The game has sparked interest among high-ranking government officials. The Iranian military deputy chief expressed concern, particularly during elections, that the game could potentially manipulate votes. He noted that it serves as a “subtle instrument” employed by the West to undermine Iran’s religious rule.
In other words, Hamster Kombat is gearing up for its second season, but it remains a question if the game developers can continue to maintain the trust they’ve built within the international gaming community.
