As we look forward to the 36th season of “The Simpsons” gracing our TV screens in 2025, it’s clear that this iconic animated series remains the longest-running in the nation. Yet, even though there seems to be no end yet, change is inevitable. The visual style has progressed over three decades, and we’ve seen a changing roster of voice actors – these adjustments are expected. However, recent remarks by veteran “Simpsons” voice actor Hank Azaria about the show’s future have left me feeling a bit down.
For over three decades, Azaria has lent his voice to “The Simpsons,” becoming famous as Moe Szyslak, Chief Wiggum, Apu, and numerous other characters. However, he appears uncertain about his future involvement in voicing these cherished roles. In a piece for the “New York Times,” Azaria expressed his thoughts on AI, which brings a tinge of sadness considering its potential impact on the beloved animated show.
In the not-too-distant future, I envision artificial intelligence becoming capable of mimicking the voices of the numerous characters I’ve given life to on The Simpsons, spanning nearly four decades. This thought brings a sense of melancholy. Beyond that, it feels unfair and inappropriate to misuse someone’s likeness or voice – mine included.
In 2023, AI played a role in the actors’ strike, and it’s possible that its influence in filmmaking could grow significantly. Given that The Simpsons has been airing for almost four decades without interruption, one might expect it to navigate AI complexities more easily. However, Azaria’s belief that AI will eventually dominate is concerning and somewhat ominous.
Although we can’t precisely foresee how AI might influence “The Simpsons,” it may potentially replicate character voices as the show progresses, as suggested by Azaria. Such a scenario could lead to some awkward circumstances for everyone involved. Moreover, watching AI-generated versions of our beloved “The Simpsons” characters that make us chuckle wouldn’t feel quite the same. Technology is constantly evolving, and with artificial intelligence making rapid strides, it’s challenging to foresee its direction even five years down the line. Fingers crossed that it won’t reach a point where it encroaches on voice actors’ chances.
For now, it appears that “The Simpsons” is here to stay, and they probably wouldn’t swap out any human voice actors with artificial intelligence. Fans can only hope that Hank Azaria and the rest of the talented cast will continue their roles for as long as they can, and that AI won’t be stepping in to replace them.
The Simpsons television show won’t air again on Fox until the end of March, but fans with a Disney+ subscription can stream all 35 seasons. If you have Hulu, you can watch Season 36 instead. There are still plenty of reasons to be excited about upcoming episodes (including performances from actor Hank Azaria), as long as they’re not AI-generated.
