Harley Quinn's Showrunners Reveal More About The Batman Sex Scene They Weren't Allowed To Include In The Animated Show

As someone who has spent countless hours immersed in the world of animated TV shows and comic book adaptations, I can’t help but feel a tinge of intrigue and disappointment when it comes to the tale of the Batman-Catwoman oral sex scene that never was in Harley Quinn.

If you’ve been a fan of the hit animated TV series, Harley Quinn, for some time now, using your Max subscription, then you’re well aware of its adult content and R-rated nature. However, even with such a bold show, there are boundaries the Harley Quinn creative team can’t cross. A notable example is their inability to include an explicit oral sex scene between Batman and Catwoman, as revealed by co-creators Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker back in 2021. Recently, they have shared more about this censored Harley Quinn moment.

In a piece published by Inverse, Justin Halpern delved into the uproar that ensued when he and Patrick Schumacker disclosed that DC had prohibited a scene showing Batman performing oral sex on Catwoman in Harley Quinn Season 3. Now, we understand why they wanted to include it in the series, as Halpern explained their motive:

In our initial planning, we decided to kick off the scene unexpectedly. Our intention was to create a humorous moment by having Catwoman already reclined on the ground, leaving viewers puzzled about the situation’s context…We aimed for an impression that he isn’t acting out of affection for her. He fails to grasp her true nature, and as a result, is unable to establish a physical or emotional bond with her.

It’s clear that Halpern and Schumacker intended the oral sex scene not as a shock tactic, but as a means to depict Batman’s emotional detachment towards Catwoman. From a storytelling standpoint, this interpretation is plausible, but it didn’t convince DC executives. They were firm in their refusal, stating “You can’t do that. You absolutely cannot do that.” Halpern explains that the primary concern was sales, as he put it, “It’s challenging to market a toy when Batman is shown engaging intimately with someone else.

Instead, the Harley Quinn crew depicted Batman providing Catwoman with a foot massage, effectively conveying his difficulty in connecting with her. However, the discarded oral sex scene garnered significant attention on social media after it was leaked, leading Justin Halpern to remark in an interview that the controversy surrounding it might have been less intense if the scene had originally been included. Interestingly, the 2021 disclosure of the oral sex scene occurred during a discussion about DC’s leniency towards the Harley Quinn team in allowing them to explore explicit and vulgar content.

After examining Harley Quinn’s history, keep in mind that Season 5, set in Metropolis, is slated to debut on television sometime next month within the 2024 schedule. Additionally, don’t forget to catch up on the spinoff “Kite Man: Hell Yeah!”, which wrapped up its first season on Max last month and includes guest appearances from Haley Cuoco’s Harley and Lake Bell’s Poison Ivy in the premiere episode.
