As a long-time fan of Harrison Ford’s iconic roles, I must say that seeing him join the Marvel Universe as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross is nothing short of thrilling! His extensive resume, from Han Solo to Rick Deckard, has more than prepared him for this new venture.
Prior to joining “Captain America: Brave New World,” Harrison Ford had already built a strong reputation across various genres through films like “Star Wars,” “Blade Runner,” and “Indiana Jones.” However, let’s not question the wisdom of this choice because it’s exciting to see Ford contribute to the superhero genre. In this movie, he plays Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, a role previously portrayed by the late William Hurt. Ford expressed some apprehension about stepping into these big shoes, but I’m more intrigued by director Julius Onah’s hints that we might see Ford in the Red Hulk form in “Brave New World.
Ross, played by Mark Ruffalo, featured in five MCU films, ranging from “The Incredible Hulk” to “Black Widow“. When offered the chance to portray this character again in the next Marvel production, Ruffalo didn’t treat it casually. Instead, he shared with Empire that he considered the offer seriously.
Initially, I felt a bit apprehensive about succeeding Bill Hurt, an exceptional actor. I was eager to discover the ideal approach to portray this character, following the audience’s previous encounters with other performers. Although I’m not deeply immersed in the Marvel Universe — living in a different one — I have enjoyed watching numerous Marvel films featuring talented actors who seemed to be enjoying themselves. And I wondered, ‘Why can’t it be me?’
Balancing the act of respecting the previous portrayal of the actor, yet avoiding any semblance of imitation, while still leaving your own distinct impression on the character is quite a challenge. For instance, in Harrison Ford’s case for “Captain America: Brave New World,” the fact that Thunderbolt Ross has significantly evolved since we last encountered him adds to this unique interpretation. In contrast to his role as the United States’ Secretary of State, this new Captain America film finds Ross serving as President, and he will strive to convince Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson to assume the position of Captain America in an official government capacity. The dynamic between them will differ from what was depicted in “Captain America: Civil War.
Well, here I am, a gamer eagerly anticipating the next big thing – Captain America: Brave New World. And let me tell you, the Red Hulk twist is the cherry on top! Just like his comic book counterpart, Ross, portrayed by none other than Chris Evans’ father, will morph into this colossal figure in the movie. The details about why he transforms are under wraps for now, but that just adds to the intrigue. Director Julius Onah has already shared his awe over Ford’s performance, calling it “mind-blowing.” Can’t wait to see what he does as the Red Hulk!
As a gamer, I couldn’t help but exclaim, “Wow, that was impressive! It’s fantastic to see the Hulk once again smashing everything in sight and embodying pure, unbridled rage.
I was already excited to see Harrison Ford Red Hulk out, especially after last month’s Captain America: Brave New World trailer showed off Red Hulk in all his glory, but Onah’s statement has me even more pumped. I’m especially interested to see if this version of the character is just Hulk with different coloring or, if like in the comics, he emits more heat the angrier he gets rather than become stronger. I also hope this Red Hulk incident isn’t a one-off, and that we could see Thunderbolt Ross turn into him at some other time.
The movie titled “Captain America: Brave New World” will be released in theaters on Valentine’s Day, 2025. To refresh your memory about the past roles of Sam Wilson and Thunderbolt Ross within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), you can rewatch their appearances using your Disney+ streaming service.
