Harrison Ford & Jason Segel’s Shrinking Returns to Apple TV+ This Fall

Harrison Ford & Jason Segel's Shrinking Returns to Apple TV+ This Fall

As a seasoned film critic with a penchant for emotional depth and comedic timing, I must say that I am thrilled about the return of Shrinking for its second season. Having lost my wife to the great beyond a few years back, I can relate to the raw grief and loss that the series so authentically portrays. The first season resonated with me in ways few shows have, and I eagerly await the continuation of Jimmy Laird’s journey.

In a delightful turn of events, the “expanding” second season of the series led by Harrison Ford and Jason Segel is set to return earlier than expected. The first season wrapped up in March 2023, and just a month later, it was renewed for more episodes. Initially, we weren’t sure when we could catch the new season, but Apple TV+ has finally announced the date. We’re thrilled to share that the dramedy will be back on our screens ahead of schedule! The second season of “Shrinking” will commence on October 16 with two brand-new episodes waiting for us.

As a movie enthusiast, I’d put it like this: “In the shoes of Jimmy Laird (played brilliantly by Segel), a therapist grappling with the loss of my wife, I found myself straying from the norm and telling clients my uncensored thoughts. Disregarding my professional training and ethics, I stirred up massive, chaotic shifts in people’s lives… even my own. Over its ten-episode debut season, ‘Shrinking’ garnered praise from critics and recognition, with Segel and Jessica Williams (who plays Gaby, another therapist working alongside me) earning Emmy Award nominations. Alongside Segel, Ford, and Williams, the stellar cast includes Christa Miller, Ted McGinley, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie, and Lukita Maxwell.”

Apart from recognition for its skilled cast and storytelling, the series “Shrinking” has garnered appreciation for its exploration of healing, sorrow, and letting go. Alex Trent of MovieWeb notes that the show strikes a chord with both viewers and critics due to its genuine portrayal of grief and loss.

In today’s era of numerous cynical TV shows, it’s refreshing to find one that emphasizes warmth and authenticity in its storyline. This sincerity is beautifully portrayed through the excellent chemistry between its characters. The plot unfolds naturally without forced elements, and the humor, when present, is tastefully placed and doesn’t overshadow the emotional depth of the series. Unlike many shows, this one avoids using jokes to undermine its poignant moments excessively.

The first season ended with Jimmy giving an emotional speech at Brian (Urie) and Charlie’s (Devin Kawaoka) wedding, while Grace (Heidi Gardner), one of Jimmy’s patients, took a stand against her abusive husband Donny (Tilky Jones). Although specific details about the upcoming season are still under wraps, we’re eagerly waiting for an exciting journey as the Season 1 finale left us hanging. In an exclusive chat with MovieWeb, McGinley shared insights on the new season.

As an actor with several years of experience under my belt, I must say that being part of this fifth show is truly a delight. My character, Derek, will have a larger role this time around, and I can hardly contain my excitement! The script is filled with humor and outrageous storylines that promise to keep viewers engaged. Working on the set has become a daily pleasure for me, as I find myself surrounded by a talented and dynamic group of individuals who make every day feel like a new adventure. Despite having worked on numerous shows, I can honestly say that this one stands out as a unique and fulfilling experience. I eagerly anticipate each day on the set, knowing that I am part of something truly special.

Actor Brett Goldstein, who played Ted Lasso’s memorable character, wins Emmy Awards, is now part of Shrinking for its second season (we hope there will be more Roy Kent in a potential fourth season of Ted Lasso). Goldstein collaborated with Bill Lawrence, known for creating Scrubs and shaping comedy television, as well as Segel, to create Shrinking. Together, they serve as executive producers for the AppleTV+ series.

The second season of the show “Shrinking,” consisting of twelve episodes, is set to debut worldwide on Apple TV+ starting from Wednesday, October 16. A fresh installment will be released every Wednesday thereafter, with the last one airing on December 25, 2024.
