In the realm of cinematic critique, I must say that the upcoming film, “Captain America: Brave New World,” promises an intriguing twist with the addition of the esteemed Harrison Ford as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, a character previously embodied by the late William Hurt. Known for his iconic roles in the “Star Wars” and “Indiana Jones” franchises, one might expect Ford to steer clear of further commitments within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, contrary to popular belief, it appears that Marvel has proven to be a far more rewarding journey for him.
In an unexpected turn of events, Ford himself has disclosed his readiness not only to reprise his role as Red Hulk post “Captain America: Brave New World,” but also expresses an eagerness to continue in this new endeavor within the MCU. While he may not be a die-hard “Star Wars” enthusiast, it seems that Marvel has left a lasting impression on him.
At a press gathering with GamesRadar+, Ford openly discussed his work on “Captain America: Brave New World” and expressed interest in reprising the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His enthusiasm for the character is palpable, suggesting he’d be thrilled to step back into the role again for a future MCU production. Nevertheless, it seems his Red Hulk alter ego might not factor into this potential return, as Ford clarified in his conversation.
I’m hoping he returns so we can explore a new narrative where he transforms beyond the Red Hulk. It seems that both the Hulk and human aspects are within his character, but that’s more for someone else to manage. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being part of this creative environment. The team is fantastic, and the world they’ve built is incredibly imaginative. So, I was excited about contributing to the story.
There’s speculation whether or not Ford will reappear in some form following “Brave New World”, but there seems to be room for additional appearances of the Red Hulk within the MCU. Given that he is often portrayed as a Hulk antagonist, it could be interesting if his character were to team up with the enraged green superhero in a solo project instead.
Marvel Studios has a pattern of retiring villains after one use, but Ford should buck this trend. After all, Han Solo’s comeback to Star Wars seems unlikely at this point… correct?
Could Red Hulk Become an Avenger? (A Dark Avenger)
Despite not being initially confirmed for this year’s Thunderbolts, there’s a strong possibility that Harrison Ford’s character could be linked with the team, given the group’s name originates from Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in the comics and his membership during Daniel Way’s 2012 Thunderbolts run. However, there’s a rumor that the film might be renamed to the Dark Avengers after the credits start rolling, which could explain the asterisk in the title.
In a slightly different context, although Red Hulk wasn’t part of the Dark Avengers in the comics, at one point he was recruited to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
The primary concern with Ford potentially rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is his apparent lack of enthusiasm for portraying his character’s powerful red alter ego. Although Ross may continue to appear as a supporting character in future Avengers movies, maintaining the Red Hulk persona could lead to more significant roles. Regardless, it’s intriguing that Ford has expressed interest in returning to the MCU before fans have had a chance to fully evaluate his performance in Captain America: Brave New World.
