As a lifelong New Yorker and a dedicated fan of both comedy and local politics, I must say that the recent Saturday Night Live sketch featuring John Mulaney as Harvey Epstein was nothing short of brilliant. The little things in life often bring us the most joy, and this instance is no exception. It’s not every day you see your city’s political landscape intertwined with the witty banter of a late-night comedy show.
In simpler terms, what’s important to note are the minor details, my friends. For instance, Harvey Epstein isn’t just a fictional character created by John Mulaney and SNL writers, but a real person living in Manhattan who happens to be running for city council. It’s heartening to know that this genuine individual, who has genuine thoughts about his portrayal on late-night TV, exists amidst the political uncertainties we face today.
On Sunday, November 3, Harvey Epstein, who is both a politician and a real person, discussed with City & State New York (as reported by EW) the fake campaign ad he featured in on SNL. Needless to say, he had plenty to share about this topic!
Is Harvey Epstein Real? The Actual Politician, Not John Mulaney, Responds
It might seem plausible to think that “Harvey Epstein” is a fictional character due to his name sharing parts with two well-known sex offenders of recent times (Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein). However, in an interview with City & State, the real Harvey Epstein clarified that he indeed exists, despite his unfortunate moniker, and even found humor in a sketch about him. Generally speaking, he appeared to be in agreement with it, albeit not entirely.
John Mulaney was adorned with earrings, his head was bald, and he wore clothes similar to what I often wear – so I believe he pulled off those elements quite well, according to Epstein. Interestingly, he also shared on Sunday that “I align with John @mulaney… let’s not label it as Epstein’s Island,” echoing a line from the video.
The incumbent State Assembly representative, who is vying for a seat on the City Council, appreciated that the deceptive advertisement showcased his genuine advocacy for tenant rights within the legislative chamber. He commented, “That’s an excellent element in the portrayal.
Nevertheless, Epstein expressed some unease when he found himself being humorously imitated on television without prior notice. He further stated that it was essential for him to strip the comedy from the situation and address the grave matter of domestic violence sincerely. Referring to Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein, he labeled them as “two truly reprehensible individuals.
In the drawing, Mulaney – sporting a bald cap and small earrings – complains about having to devote so much effort on the campaign trail clarifying to voters that he is neither Harvey Weinstein nor Jeffrey Epstein. “I’ll be honest,” Mulaney admits. “The name situation has turned into somewhat of a problem. ‘Harvey’ I can almost cope with – but ‘Epstein’? It’s become a burden around my neck.” A subsequent scene depicts Mulaney’s character asserting that he is distinct from both Weinstein and Epstein, even going as far as to state, “They may look alike in photos, but let me assure you, they did not merge to create me.
Mulaney is recognized for creating unique sketches set in New York City that are popular, whether as a writer or later on as a host. So, it’s likely we’ll see his character Harvey Epstein again when he hosts next time. If not, the real Harvey Epstein expressed enthusiasm about stepping into Mulaney’s shoes and appearing on SNL instead.
