Hauser & Wirth Announces Representation of Jeffrey Gibson

As a seasoned gamer with a keen eye for art, I can confidently say that Jeffrey Gibson is a trailblazer in the contemporary art world. With his unique blend of cultural histories and artistic mastery, he’s not just creating art, but sparking conversations that resonate deeply.

Art gallery Hauser & Wirth has declared that they will represent American artist Jeffrey Gibson, a member of the Mississippi Choctaw-Cherokee tribe, on a global scale. Originally from Colorado and now residing in Upstate New York, Gibson has recently been selected as the first Indigenous artist to represent the United States at the ongoing Venice Biennale. His work, showcased in the U.S. pavilion, offers a lively mix of sculptures, tapestries, and film installations that reflect his personal connections with the country he was born in, while also mirroring and aligning with the experiences of native communities worldwide.

In October 2025, Jeffrey will debut his new gallery at Art Basel in Paris, coupled with a solo exhibition at Hauser’s French branch. This is highlighted by the words of Hauser & Wirth president, Marc Payot, who described Jeffrey as a remarkable figure in contemporary art, possessing both sharp cultural insight and masterful control over form, color, and the fusion of various artistic languages across diverse mediums.

For more than three decades, Jeffrey’s artistic work has been deeply influenced by Native American, Indigenous, and queer histories. By blending narratives, he develops a universal language that celebrates diverse cultural expressions. As Payot noted, through his paintings, sculptures, public installations, performances, and collaborative projects to promote education, Jeffrey tackles the most complex and significant issues with humor and enthusiasm. His art serves as a continuous critique of American culture, offering a blend of fierce yet loving, strong yet radiant perspectives. Most importantly, it generously invites everyone to participate in this discourse.

After showcasing his work titled “I will continue to change” at Art Basel Paris in 2024, artist Gibson plans to reveal a fresh, immersive installation called “POWER FULL BECAUSE WE’RE DIFFERENT” at MASS MoCA’s Building 5 gallery in North Adams, Massachusetts. This exhibition will debut in November 2024 and explores the concept of “two-spirit,” a third gender that is neither male nor female, which is frequently viewed as a spiritual identity among Indigenous communities.
