As a long-time devotee of the magical world that J.K. Rowling created and the enchanting cinematic adaptations that brought it to life, I find myself deeply moved by the heartwarming stories that continue to emerge from the Harry Potter universe years after the final film was released. The latest tale that has captured my attention is David Holmes’ inspiring memoir, “The Boy Who Lived: When Magic and Reality Collide.
In 2009, David Holmes, who stood in for Daniel Radcliffe as his stunt double in the initial six Harry Potter films, experienced a devastating accident on set which resulted in him becoming paralyzed. Later, Holmes penned a book about this experience and his journey of adapting to life post-injury titled The Boy Who Lived: When Magic and Reality Collide. Emma Watson, another Harry Potter cast member, read the book and expressed her emotional response in a touching review, stating she hasn’t stopped crying after reading it.
The Boy Who Lived was released in November and features a foreword by Daniel Radcliffe, who has remained close with David Holmes. Emma Watson — aka Hermione Granger in the beloved films — raved about the book on her Instagram Stories, writing:
I’ve recently completed reading David Holmes’ enchanting book, ‘The Boy who lived’, following his heartfelt foreword by Dan. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions – plenty of tears (and some wonderful laughs, as it’s David after all 💕💕), but if you’re seeking a heartwarming read this holiday season that offers a peek behind the scenes of creating a film like Harry Potter while delving into the personal journey of finding one’s place and purpose in life amidst life’s challenges… David’s book is truly captivating. Bravo, dear David! We adore you xxx Emma
The life-altering incident that befell David Holmes took place while they were filming the first part of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” In a mishap during stunt testing, his stunt double suffered paralysis from the chest down. However, in 2023, he and Daniel Radcliffe appeared together in a documentary named “David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived” (streamable with a Max subscription), which focuses on their lasting friendship.
It seems David Holmes has remained close with Emma Watson and other members of the cast as well, despite it being more than a decade since the final movie came out. He gushed over the actress on his own Instagram following her sweet review, even hilariously revealing that he once doubled as Hermione in one of the movies:

Over time, viewers have taken pleasure in observing the film’s cast members reflect on their life-altering childhood roles, with numerous amusing anecdotes, footage, and photos emerging. For example, there was a hilarious incident from “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” where Robert Pattinson apparently forgot Emma Watson’s name, leading her to label him as downright rude! She has also recounted another embarrassing moment from that movie that likely caused her both physical discomfort and significant annoyance.
The actors from the “Harry Potter” series are forever linked to their iconic characters, and this appears particularly relevant in the case of David Holmes. It’s heartening to witness his past co-stars still standing by him as he navigates his path, even after all these years.
