The renowned X-Line Chair, initially designed by Danish artist Niels Jorgen Haugesen in the later part of the 1970s, is being reintroduced by HAY. Known for its industrial charm and stackability, this lightweight metal chair is set to return in a variety of vibrant hues.
Rolf Hay, co-founder of HAY, commented that “The X-Line Chair is one of only a few high-tech items originating from Denmark.” However, he also noted that in numerous aspects, it’s one of the most intelligent designs our nation has produced. He described it as remarkably minimalist and thoughtfully designed.
This design deviates from Denmark’s traditional mid-century furniture, which often features organic shapes and heavy use of wood. Instead, this chair has sleek, streamlined lines made from chrome wire and perforated steel, reflecting a functionalist approach. Notably, when stacked, the X shape becomes visible, a feature that highlights its practicality and utility.
Originating at the tail end of the mid-20th century Modernist movements, the X-line chair stands out from the usual soft contours and material characteristics common in traditional Danish design. Following his time as an apprentice under Anne Jacobsen during the 1960s, Haugesen established his own studio in 1971, and it was here that he introduced the X-Line chair for the first time, in its original chrome finish, in 1977.
In 1987, the recipient of the Danish ID Prize was a chair that was later reintroduced by Danish brand Magnus Olesen in 2022 following a hiatus from the market. However, Hay’s recent release offers unique color combinations, collaboratively curated with the Haugesen estate, featuring an array of greens, rusty reds, and blues.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming release of the X-Line Chair! If you’re like me and always on the lookout for top-notch gaming furniture, here’s some great news: The X-Line Chair is now available for pre-order from official HAY dealers. Mark your calendars, as it’s set to launch in Spring 2025! Get ready to level up your gaming setup with this awesome chair!
