As a long-time fan of the Star Wars saga, I can wholeheartedly empathize with Hayden Christensen‘s disdain for sand. Having spent countless hours on beaches myself, I can attest that the feeling towards sand is not one of love, but rather an exasperated tolerance. Sand gets everywhere, it’s rough, and it’s a constant reminder that you’re never far from the water, which might as well be a mirage when you’re stuck on Tatooine.
If you know one thing about Anakin Skywalker, it’s that he turns to the Dark Side. If you know two things about Anakin Skywalker it’s that he turns to the Dark Side and he really doesn’t like sand. His feelings on sand are well known, and endlessly meme-able, but it turns out actor Hayden Christensen doesn’t feel that differently, and honestly, I get it.
A video clip of Hayden Christensen from a past Star Wars Celebration interview has resurfaced on TikTok once more, shedding light on the actor’s perspective about sand. The sarcastic humor surrounding Anakin Skywalker’s dislike of sand in “Attack of the Clones” is well-known, but Christensen explains that he understands why his character detested the sand because…
I’m not such a big fan of it myself. Although, if it leads to the water I can tolerate it, but Anakin came from a desert planet, so I understood his contempt for it.
Truly, I can relate. For many of us, our encounters with sand are primarily at the beach, and though the beach is beloved by many, I wonder if anyone truly cherishes sand? It’s coarse and it has a knack for getting into the most unexpected places. At least we get to appreciate the ocean in exchange, but poor Anakin Skywalker never had that luxury on Tatooine. Can you envision a world that is simply an endless beach, yet devoid of any ocean? Who among us would continue to admire sand if we were forced to reside there for any significant period?
Although this video dates back a few years, it’s heartening to witness Hayden Christensen and fans sharing their joy for Star Wars together at last. Initially, the prequels were met with harsh criticism upon release, and Hayden Christensen, being central in two of them, experienced a significant share of that negative feedback. Ahmed Best, known for his portrayal of Jar Jar Binks, has openly discussed moments when he considered suicide due to the intense dislike his character received.
In more modern times, the prequel films have been given a second look and are now generally considered either quite good or at least not worth causing a stir over. Actor Hayden Christensen has expressed it’s touching to see the prequels being accepted, and he has since reprised his role in two different Star Wars series on Disney+ and attended conventions where fans, such as this one, greet him affectionately. It’s uncertain what lies ahead for Hayden Christensen in the distant galaxy of Star Wars, but it’s likely that he’ll remain active within and beyond his character in the Star Wars universe. Also, don’t forget to look out for him when you visit Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, as he has been spotted there as well!
