The upcoming spin-off from HBO’s “Game of Thrones” has been postponed, moving its premiere date to 2026. This delay might also influence the release schedule for “House of the Dragon” Season 3, which started filming in March 2025 and was initially planned for a 2026 release, about two years following the debut of Season 2. However, it appears that the new series within the “Game of Thrones” franchise, originally slated for 2025, will no longer be released as planned.
As a devoted Game of Thrones fan, I was eagerly anticipating the release of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” a new spin-off series set in the universe I adore. However, it seems that HBO has pushed back its scheduled debut, initially planned for 2025. While there wasn’t an official date announced, we were all looking forward to catching a glimpse of this new tale in the coming years.
Recently, Max shared a sneak peek at various projects set to air between 2024 and 2025, including “House of the Dragon” Season 2’s finale. To our delight, clips from “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” were also featured, fueling speculation that we might still see it in 2025. But alas, it appears that we’ll have to wait a bit longer for this exciting addition to the Game of Thrones saga.
At Warner Bros. Discovery’s Upfront event, Variety reported a sneak peek of the official trailer for “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”. Towards the end of the clip, a title card appeared with the date “2026” on it.
2026 does not have a confirmed release date yet, but HBO CEO Casey Bloys hinted at an upcoming winter debut for the series. This suggests that it might air during the first few months of 2026 as those months are still considered the winter season.
The postponement of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” might significantly impact the airing of “House of the Dragon” Season 3, a series now being produced with an anticipated release date around 2026.
The upcoming series, titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms“, will feature Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell in the roles of Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg. This show, consisting of six episodes, is based on George R.R. Martin’s novella, “The Hedge Knight“, which initiates a series of tales about Dunk and Egg. Notably, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” unfolds around 100 years prior to the happenings in “Game of Thrones“.
Will House of the Dragon Season 3 Be Delayed?
Given that “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” has been rescheduled for release in 2026, there’s a possibility that “House of the Dragon” Season 3 might experience a similar delay. The first season of “House of the Dragon” premiered in August 2022, with the second season debuting 22 months later, in June 2024.
Based on the overlap in production timelines, it’s been anticipated that approximately two years after the debut of Season 2, we might expect the release of House of the Dragon Season 3. This means that if everything goes as planned, Season 3 could be available for viewing around June 2026.
Given that “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is slated for release between January and February 2026, HBO might prefer not to have two significant shows from the same universe premiering within the same year.
If “House of the Dragon” Season 3 is set for release in 2026, there’s a good chance it might get delayed to a later part of the year to avoid both shows premiering too closely together on the calendar.
It appears quite possible that the premiere date for “House of the Dragon” might shift to 2027. If HBO decides to air both shows in 2026, it’s almost unthinkable that any “Game of Thrones” series would debut in 2027 instead.
As a movie connoisseur, I find myself eagerly anticipating HBO’s lineup of spin-offs from the epic saga, “Game of Thrones.” It seems their strategy leans towards releasing one season of a new show every year. This approach, if implemented correctly, would allow each series to enjoy a generous two-year development cycle, should they be rolled out sequentially.
Information about House of the Dragon’s third season is expected to be shared by HBO in the coming weeks.
