HBO’s The Penguin Is Just the Beginning of The Batman Spinoffs

HBO's The Penguin Is Just the Beginning of The Batman Spinoffs

As a lifelong fan of Batman and his intricate web of villains, I can’t help but feel a surge of excitement at Matt Reeves’ vision for expanding the universe of Gotham City on HBO. Having grown up reading the comics, watching animated series, and even donning a (less-than-successful) Batsuit in my backyard, this news feels like a dream come true.

In a potential expansion of Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” universe, HBO could witness a grand and violent future, as the director expresses interest in delving deeper into significant characters from the Batman mythology through their own series. The first of these, “The Penguin,” featuring Colin Farrell as the main antagonist, premiered its inaugural episode yesterday, garnering an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 91%. Initially, three spin-offs were planned from Reeves’ “The Batman” (starring Robert Pattinson), but both the “Arkham Asylum” and “GCPD” shows have been canceled by HBO. Previously, fans assumed that only “The Penguin” would be a spin-off from Reeves’ film, but the director now aims for multiple more.

As a passionate movie enthusiast speaking about my latest plans, I recently shared with Digital Spy how I aim to expand the universe of ‘The Batman’ for television. In contrast to ‘The Penguin’, this series will delve deeply into the perspective of Oz Cobbs, leaving the main narrative of Bruce Wayne untouched, which is beautifully told through ‘The Batman’ movies.

We’re discussing with HBO, particularly about longer formats, considering that the films heavily emphasize Batman’s perspective. This would allow us more space to delve deeply into the background and personalities of the villainous characters in his rogues gallery.

Drawing inspiration from the comic “Batman: Year One”, Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman finds him in his second year of crime-fighting, with his rogues gradually making an appearance. As more films from “The Batman” series unfold, director Matt Reeves envisions the villains of Gotham City stepping into the limelight through their own HBO television shows. He further added:

In the comics, a group of villains, often in reaction to this masked hero, emerge. Although it doesn’t depict Batman’s origin story, it does hint at his roots, as it tells their own origins instead. You’ll encounter Oz before he becomes the Kingpin, and Selina before she dons the Catwoman persona. You’ll see various characters in this way. This gives us a chance to delve into how these characters are created and what that means psychologically, which I find incredibly intriguing as we bring these stories to life with HBO.

Which Batman Villains Could Get Their Own Spin-Offs?

The obvious choice for a new HBO series would be the Joker (played by Barry Keoghan). However, part of the allure of the Joker is the mystery that surrounds the character, and there’s always the risk that an entire series focusing on the character could reveal too much. Matt Reeves also recently confirmed that his Batman universe will avoid the character’s more fantastical villains, meaning no Batman vs. Man-Bat showdown in the future.

Considering Batman’s roster of villains, numerous characters could headline their own series. For instance, The Penguin is one of the classic antagonists, but there are also other standouts such as Scarecrow, Bane, Two-Face, and Deathstroke. It would be fantastic if these less recognized, yet equally terrifying villains, like Professor Pyg, Victor Zsasz, Hush, Black Mask, and even Red Hood, gained more popularity among mainstream audiences through shows on the HBO platform, as they all have great potential for compelling television.

New episodes of
The Penguin
will be released weekly on HBO and Max.
