‘He Is Morally A Complex Human Being’: James Gunn Opens Up About How Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. Is Important To Superman And The Rest Of The DC Universe

As a long-time fan who has witnessed Frank Grillo’s transformative performances across various genres, I am absolutely thrilled about his upcoming role as Rick Flag Sr. in the DC Universe! His time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was impressive, but it seems that the depth and complexity of Flag will give him a lot more to sink his teeth into.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Frank Grillo played Brock Rumlow, or Crossbones, but his future roles in the new DC Universe franchise as Rick Flag Sr. promise a more expansive part for him. Initially, Grillo will lend his voice to the character in the upcoming animated series “Creature Commandos,” set to premiere for Max subscribers in December. This will be followed by his live-action portrayal of Flag in James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” film and “Peacemaker” Season 2. Gunn, who jointly runs DC Studios with Peter Safran, elaborated on the significance of Flag during the early phase of the DC Universe.

It’s confirmed that Grillo will feature in the 2025 film, “Superman”, following photos of him on set being leaked by paparazzi. Gunn praised Rick Flag Sr., stating he’s a “cool character that Frank has been shaping,” and added that he’s one of the main characters in the upcoming season of “Peacemaker”. Given his history with John Cena’s character, Christopher Smith, who killed Rick Flag Jr., in “The Suicide Squad” (which is indeed part of the DCU canon), this isn’t unexpected. Speaking to EW, Gunn commented:

This individual isn’t simply a good person; he’s far from it. We witness various aspects of his character, making him a morally complex individual. Grillo is someone I’ve known for a while now, and I’ve longed to collaborate with him. He was among the first people I spoke to when I took over the studio, saying, “We’ll find something interesting for you,” and now he’s everywhere.

In the upcoming scenes, Rick Flag Senior assumes command over the Creature Commandos, an extraordinary group that includes David Harbour’s Frankenstein, Indira Varma as The Bride, Alan Tudyk’s Doctor Phosphorous (who may also feature in Superman), Zoë Chao as Nina Mazursky, G.I. Robot and Weasel. Sean Gunn will portray both G.I. Robot and Weasel. After the occurrences of The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Season 1, Amanda Waller is barred from using humans in her covert A.R.G.U.S. missions. As a result, she has gathered this team of monsters to execute her orders, and it will be Flag’s responsibility to keep them under control.

Apart from Rick Flag Sr.’s significant role in the storyline, James Gunn highlighted that this would mark the initial instance of a new policy he and Peter Safran established earlier – actors will portray characters consistently across live-action and animated productions. Therefore, Frank Grillo is set to pioneer this cross-media strategy, with Gunn stating:

Actors need versatility across various genre types, and Frank excels in this regard. He has demonstrated exceptional talent in both comedic roles like those in Creature Commandos, as well as dramatic performances akin to Peacemaker and Superman.

You’ll first encounter Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr. in the premiere of “Creature Commandos,” airing December 5 on Max. Following that, “Superman” is scheduled for July 11, 2025. Although there’s no official release date for Season 2 of “Peacemaker,” it’s anticipated to be out next year as well.
