As a die-hard fan of Futurama who has followed this space-age saga through its numerous timelines and revivals, I find myself utterly captivated by the multiverse meddling that seems to be at play in the Hulu era of the show. With my vast knowledge of quantum physics and time travel (okay, maybe not that vast), I can’t help but wonder if this latest twist is leading us towards something truly epic.
Heads up! This conversation might include spoilers from Season 12 of Futurama. If you’re still planning to catch up on the show and haven’t finished it yet, beware!
Hello everyone! We’re just one week further from the finale of “Futurama” Season 12, wrapping up the escapades of Fry, Leela, and the Planet Express crew as per the 2024 TV lineup. This is the time when someone would probably come up with an exciting prediction about how things will unfold, and where the iconic series created by Matt Groening and David X. Cohen might be headed next.
Although I’m not completely sure, a troubling pattern in Season 12 has sparked a wild guess about its direction. However, I do have a hunch as to why we’re in this situation now. So, just like in the spirit of Futurama, it seems I’ve got a theory without realizing it! Get ready, everyone! It’s time to delve into what might shape the future of Futurama’s future!
Season 12 Has Engaged In A Pattern Of Apocalyptic, Unresolved Cliffhangers
As a gaming enthusiast reporting on the press day for Futurama’s Season 12, I found myself intrigued by the way things unfolded. The initial set of episodes handed to us journalists concluded at an enigmatic juncture – we were gifted with six out of the ten episodes that form the latest Hulu subscription series. This left me, and other fellow journalists, in a state of suspense as we were left guessing about the fate of our favorite characters after the ominous “Attack of the Clothes” cliffhanger echoed through our minds.
After several weeks, when Season 12’s seventh episode, “Planet Espresso,” dropped, I found myself taken aback that the series had already progressed to another episode. To make matters more intriguing, there was another ominous twist hinting at an alien race plotting to transform humans through coffee consumption. This tantalizing mystery was further deepened when Episode 8, “Cuteness Overload,” morphed Fuzzy Funbags into a mix of Gremlins and the Xenomorphs from Aliens.
It’s fortunate that the second-to-last episode of Season 12, titled “The Futurama Mystery Library”, was structured as an anthology. This format allowed the stories within it to not necessarily require definitive conclusions or specific actions. However, with three weeks of episodes featuring grand finales hinting at impending disaster, yet leading nowhere, it seems there must be some underlying significance, doesn’t it?
Futurama’s Season 12’s Finale Is Going To Return To A Pivotal Episode…Again
Something that has also been sitting in my mind is the fact that Season 12 was previously teased to be ending with an episode that would revisit Comedy Central’s Futurama series finale, “Meanwhile.” It wouldn’t be the first time the Hulu era of episodes would do this, as Season 11’s opener, “The Impossible Stream,” returned us to that very moment in time, unfrozen and with everyone unaware of what had happened – just as promised.
Meanwhile, here’s what Season 12’s finale “Otherwise” has as its episode synopsis:
When Fry proposes to Leela, he is overcome by a near-fatal attack of déjà vu.
It’s quite intriguing that Fry (Billy West) seems on the verge of a life-threatening encounter with recurring events. This is peculiar given his history of numerous deaths, yet he managed to rewind time far enough to evade what was supposed to be a heartwarming final episode.
Given that we’re aware of how Futurama continued after Season 12, it’s reasonable to expect an ending without a heartwarming resolution. Instead, it might set up events that would make us eagerly anticipate another season to unfold!
I Think An Even Greater Cliffhanger Is In The Works For Futurama
In a conversation with David Herman and John DiMaggio from Futurama, it’s been affirmed that production on Seasons 13 and 14 is still underway. Although the streaming world has witnessed some unexpected changes in completed series, I don’t foresee another cancellation happening anytime soon.
“I believe ‘Otherwise’ will conclude with an even more suspenseful cliffhanger, potentially resolving some lingering questions from Season 12. This assumption is strengthened by my recent rewatch of Season 11’s finale, ‘All The Way Down,’ which made me realize that Futurama was once again dabbling in a classic sci-fi concept: the multiverse.
In the realm of Hulu’s series, it seems like two distinct realms were introduced during its era. Could it be possible that the reason several episodes from Season 12 concluded with cataclysmic events looming on our horizon is because we’ve been peeking into the workings of other dimensions? And what’s more, how will these disparate universes eventually intertwine?
Could Futurama’s Multiverse Meddling Be Leading To Something Gigantic?
Rereading the occurrences depicted in “Meanwhile” presents some intriguing queries, one of which might link to the multiversal hypothesis. Since Professor Farnsworth (Billy West) was transported into another timeline during Futurama‘s second series finale, he utilized this circumstance to rescue Fry and Leela after “decades” of attempts. Could it be possible that the events we’re witnessing are actually more divergent timelines stemming from The Professor’s successful restart at the beginning of Season 11?
Additionally, could it be possible that Hulu’s multiple seasons are designed to maintain a cohesive narrative for Futurama, which has technically ended on two occasions? This method of storytelling is quite cleverly devised, considering Fry and Leela (played by Katey Sagal) have found their ‘happily ever after’ in each series finale, only to have it disrupted by the excitement of a revival.
From a more positive perspective, such a plotline could potentially prompt Hulu to reconsider canceling the series once more, given that it’s unfolding within the ongoing narrative. This is a classic example of the “bite the hand that feeds” approach, which has been a characteristic of Futurama since its inception, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the writing team were aiming to tie up all loose ends.
Futurama’s Hulu Era Suggests An Even Longer Game Is At Work
Ponder this: If the series Futurama was planned with a predetermined number of seasons, then creators Matt Groening, David X. Cohen, and the entire writing team could strategically plan out a complex, long-term narrative that spans across the Hulu era. After all, why would the episode “All The Way Down” go to such intricate lengths to introduce the idea of the multiverse if it wasn’t part of a larger, multi-season storyline?
In case you wonder if the writers of Futurama don’t plan that far ahead, take note of the following: The title card for “The Futurama Mystery Library” reads “You streamed it, you can’t unstream it.” This is a clever nod to “Anthology of Interest 2,” demonstrating once more the series’ keen attention to continuity. If my theory about this interconnected narrative is correct, we might have explored multiple universes in this story, with even more to unfold.
Maybe I’ve been in space for too long and have lost touch with reality, or perhaps it’s something else entirely! We’ll find out soon enough when the final episode of Futurama‘s Season 12, titled “Otherwise,” premieres on Hulu next Monday, September 30th.
