It’s now been two years since we last heard news about The Last of Us Season 2, but the trailer has just been released, and I find myself ill-equipped for what’s to come. There is one particular scene that I already know will shatter my heart.
And it’s really not the scene you’d expect.
People who are familiar with me can attest to the fact that I hold “The Last of Us” in high regard, perhaps even among my top favorites in video game series. The thought of a third installment has me on tenterhooks. Naturally, when news broke about its adaptation into a TV show, I was hooked instantly and enjoyed every moment of it.
In the second season, there will likely be numerous emotional upheavals. However, the scene that most people believe will shatter hearts everywhere isn’t what I want to discuss at the moment. Before we delve into this topic, a word of caution: This discussion may contain spoilers for those who haven’t played “The Last of Us Part II.
First Off, I’m A Huge Last Of Us Fan, So Yes, I Am So Excited For Season 2
To clarify from the start, let me confess that I’m deeply passionate about this series, an ardent follower for quite some time now. In all honesty, it was this game that ignited my interest in gaming. So enamored was I, I actually purchased a PlayStation 3 expressly to enjoy it. And from that moment on, my fascination with zombie games spiraled into an intense obsession.
…but anyway.
This game marked a pivotal moment in my life, and when its first TV series premiered, I was immediately captivated. Despite some differences between the video game and the show, I found myself thoroughly pleased with it. The cast of “The Last of Us” delivered outstanding performances, and the storytelling was executed masterfully, evoking every emotion I expected to feel.
In a surprising turn of events, I never imagined myself bawling my eyes out over Bill and Frank’s relationship from ‘The Last of Us’, but there I was in 2023, a tear-streaked face on the couch, clutching a tissue box in one hand and a comforting stuffed animal in the other. That emotional scene between Bill and Frank from ‘The Last of Us’ will forever linger in my memory.
Even though some viewers have criticized the show, I’m still excited for Season 2 in 2025, and Bella Ramsay’s performance as Ellie is exceptional, regardless of your opinions. Despite knowing that Season 2 might be tough on me emotionally, I can’t wait to see it.
Last chance: turn away now if you have not played the sequel game!

Yes, Joel’s Death Is Going To Be Brutal, And It Will Break Hearts, But It’s Not The Moment That I Am Thinking Of
Yeah, so we all know it’s coming. There’s no way around it.
Based on what we’ve seen in the trailer, Joel appears infrequently, mirroring his limited screen time in the original game, strongly suggesting that his character may meet an untimely end. This is a certainty, with no room for doubt or alternative possibilities.
Indeed, that heart-wrenching scene where Joel meets his end was undeniably painful, yet I must confess, it had been on my wishlist since the conclusion of the first season. In fact, I’d carefully documented moments from The Last of Us Part II that I hoped would be included in the sequel, and Joel’s demise was one of them.
Pedro Pascal’s character Joel may meet his end, but given the structure of The Last of Us Part II, it’s quite likely that his influence will continue through flashbacks. If the series chooses to split Part II into two seasons, there’s a chance we might see Joel again in Season 3.
It’s going to be tough watching him leave, and I can feel the tears welling up as if I were a fragile infant who easily gets emotional.
Nevertheless, I’m not referring to the tear-jerking scene I want to discuss, which I expect will unfold in Season 2 based on the trailer. The emotionally devastating event we should focus on now is undoubtedly going to disintegrate our spirits into countless fragments and reduce them to dust on our living room carpets – it’s the heart-wrenching birthday flashback.

That Birthday Flashback Is Going To HIT Hard
If you’ve experienced “The Last of Us”, it seems likely given your presence here. In the subsequent game, there are numerous flashbacks that depict the events unfolding between Joel and Ellie over time, which eventually led to their estrangement. Remarkably, one of these flashbacks takes place on Ellie’s birthday.
In this flashback scene, Joel brings Ellie to an antique museum, a place she’s never visited before, and it’s filled with heartwarming moments. While many events depend on player interaction, one unavoidable instance is when Joel guides Ellie into an old spaceship.
In the sequel, there’s a rare instance where Ellie and Joel appear genuinely content as he hands over a recorder playing take-off sounds, and she dons a space helmet.
Truthfully, this is a rare occurrence for these two.
At that pivotal moment, I’m certain it will break our hearts, given all the hardships and sorrows we faced in recent episodes.

Honestly, I Think Season 2 Will Surpass Season 1 – In Terms Of Gut-Wrenching Scenes, So Get Prepared
When Season 1 debuted, it was a hot topic everywhere. It felt like everyone couldn’t stop discussing this series, outshining even House of the Dragon on Max, and establishing itself as one of HBO’s most successful shows ever. Now, the trailer for the next season has generated significant buzz, with fans eagerly anticipating its arrival.
With that next season comes a lot of pain, and I don’t think people are ready for it.
It’s clear that Season 1 of the show had numerous episodes that caused quite a stir online, even beyond the usual extent. However, I have a feeling that Season 2 will outshine it. The death of Joel is bound to be a shock, and I can already imagine my brother and father, both huge Pedro Pascal fans, criticizing me for getting them hooked on this series!
It seems to me that my family might not be ready for those unexpected, heart-aching instances; the ones that take us unawares. Yet, I can only wish and hope that the global community manages to prepare itself adequately before such moments arrive.
I’m curious to find out what aspects of The Last of Us Season 2 have you particularly thrilled, since the only detail I’ve gathered so far is that we should be expecting April to make an appearance soon.
