Following his retirement from his own label in 2005, the versatile artist Helmut Lang shifted focus towards the arts. He repurposed a vast collection of garments from his label into raw materials for his substantial sculptures. Although he no longer possesses a personal collection of the brand (as it has been converted into artworks and gifted to various international art and fashion collections), Lang’s interest in materials finding new life remained a key aspect of his work.
Currently, Lang’s chimera-inspired sculptures are making their way to Los Angeles as part of What remains behind, his latest solo exhibition situated at the Schindler House of the MAK Center. Guided by Neville Wakefield’s curation, this show delves into the artist’s personal connection with materials that possess a history, unique presence, and carry the marks and memories of their previous function.
Lang fills the sacred area with his eerie presence, stirring up both shared pasts and uncharted futures. The materials, which were once pliable, are shaped into rigid, fist-like forms, retaining their earlier marks and indentations. Made from mattress foam, rubber, and wax, his sculptures explore the essence of these materials, brimming with significance, reminiscence, and potential. Instead of a fixed collection, they create a transitional zone where form is in a perpetual state of transformation.
What remains behind will be on view in Los Angeles from February 19 through May 4, 2025.
