As a die-hard Bond fan, I’ve been eagerly waiting for Henry Cavill to step into the role of Britain’s iconic secret agent ever since Daniel Craig announced his retirement post the release of No Time to Die. The anticipation and demand skyrocketed last week when an audition tape of Cavill for Casino Royale (Craig’s debut as James Bond) surfaced online. Fans went wild over the video, but veteran Bond director Martin Campbell has dismissed it as MI6 trickery, labeling it pure “nonsense.
In a chat with ScreenRant for the promotion of his upcoming action film, “Cleaner,” featuring Daisy Ridley, Martin Campbell was questioned about the alleged leaked audition videos for Henry Cavill and Antony Starr from “The Boys” for the role of James Bond. His initial response was that it was likely “nonsense.” Throughout the discussion, Campbell shared his thoughts on the tests as well as the widespread speculation within the 007 community regarding the next actor to assume the role – a topic he’s familiar with given his work on both “GoldenEye” and “Casino Royale.” Campbell stated:
You know, anything you might hear or read about Bond, whether it’s regarding casting or other details online, take it with a grain of salt. I’ve been part of two Bond films, and let me tell you, the rumors that circulate are astounding – almost entirely unfounded. In fact, I’d say they’re nearly one hundred percent inaccurate.
Regarding the leaked audition tape of Henry Cavill, Martin Campbell clarified that it wasn’t for the role in “Casino Royale”. Surprisingly, Campbell associated Cavill’s audition with the 1995 film “GoldenEye”. However, there seems to be a misunderstanding as Cavill was only 12 when “GoldenEye” was released, and he doesn’t appear that young in the video. Martin Campbell commented:
Occasionally, I come across something amusing on YouTube, like Henry Cavill’s supposed Casino Royale audition. However, it’s not entirely accurate. It was more of a GoldenEye audition, but the title connection to Casino Royale is fictitious. They often fabricate stories like this, and in truth, they’re rather misleading.
It appears Campbell might be suggesting that GoldenEye and Casino Royale are distinct films with noticeably different dialogues for Daniel Craig in his first appearance as Bond, compared to the lines Cavill was asked to deliver in GoldenEye.
Who Is the Current Favorite for James Bond?
Keeping track of who might be next to play James Bond after Daniel Craig is as challenging as working for MI6, given how frequently the frontrunner seems to switch almost daily. Some names that have consistently come up in recent years include Henry Cavill, Idris Elba, John Boyega, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Theo James, and most recently Paul Mescal. These actors have all garnered support from fans and betting sites alike.
It seems that whenever a fresh action movie hits the screens, its leading man often becomes the top pick for the role of Bond, and the current frontrunner is no exception. At present, Scottish actor Stuart Martin is the bookies’ preferred choice to portray Bond in the upcoming film of the franchise. Known for his work in Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead” and the “Rebel Moon” series, Martin may well land the role. However, it’s important to note that director Martin Campbell has previously debunked many of the casting speculations, stating that most of them are off-target altogether. The director remarked:
You won’t find out who will ultimately become James Bond until the two producers, Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson, make their decision.
