Henry Cavill's Live-Action 'Voltron' Adds Sterling K. Brown & Rita Ora

As a movie critic with a soft spot for nostalgia and a deep appreciation for diverse casts, I must say that the upcoming live-action Voltron film is shaping up to be quite the spectacle. With a roster of talent that spans across genres – from Sterling K. Brown‘s Emmy Award-winning performances, Rita Ora’s pop stardom, and John Kim’s rising star on Prime Video, to Henry Cavill’s action-packed pedigree – it’s clear that Amazon MGM is aiming high with this adaptation.

Just like how the mighty robot Voltron is assembled from five separate components, the cast and crew for the upcoming live-action Voltron movie are coming together seamlessly. For years, attempts have been made to bring this iconic animated series to life on the big screen, but now, under the guidance of director Rawson Marshall Thurber at Amazon MGM, it’s finally taking shape. Known for movies such as Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and Red Notice, Thurber is set to lead the adaptation of Voltron: Defender of the Universe, a series that was itself a fusion of two original anime shows – Beast King GoLion and Armored Fleet Dairugger XV. Originally airing as the highest-rated syndicated animated series, the demand for a feature film version has been strong for over ten years.

The latest news unveils that Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, and John Kim will be part of the star-studded cast for the upcoming movie titled Voltron. Joining them are Henry Cavill and Daniel Quinn-Toye. Rawson Marshall Thurber, who co-wrote the script with Ellen Shanman, will take charge as director. As of now, no specifics about the plot or characters have been disclosed, but it’s expected that these five actors (Cavill, Quinn-Toye, Brown, Ora, and Kim) will portray the five pilots who operate the lion mechs that form the mighty Voltron. No official filming date has been set for this highly anticipated adaptation by Amazon MGM.

Sterling K. Brown is primarily recognized for his Emmy-winning portrayals in “American Crime Story: The Trial of OJ Simpson” and “This Is Us”. He’s also featured in hit movies such as “Black Panther” and “Frozen II”, and was recently nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in “American Fiction”. Rita Ora is a globally famous pop artist, who has acted in films like “Fifty Shades of Grey”, “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu”, and “Descendants: The Rise of Red”. As of now, John Kim is starring in “Cruel Intentions” on Prime Video, which premiered on November 21, 2025.

Regardless of the flop at the box office for Red One, Amazon MGM continues to pour substantial resources into major motion pictures intended for cinematic release. Instead, they are now focusing on bringing popular animated series like Voltron and the forthcoming Masters of the Universe to life. Interestingly, these two productions share a similarity, as they are both adaptations of iconic 1980s cartoons that boast talented ensembles who have also starred in Amazon’s primary streaming rival, Netflix’s animated series.

Voltron, a much-anticipated movie, taps into the audience’s fond memories of both the 1980s animated series and the highly acclaimed Netflix reboot, Voltron: Legendary Defender. Boasting a diverse ensemble cast that includes esteemed Emmy winner Sterling K. Brown, action star Henry Cavill, music sensation Rita Ora, as well as fresh talents like Daniel Quinn-Toye and John Kim, this film is poised to be a must-watch. With Rita Ora on board, fans are eagerly awaiting an excellent soundtrack song from her for the movie. As of now, there’s no announced release date for Amazon MGM’s Voltron, but it’s likely to debut in theaters at some point and also stream on Prime Video eventually.
