Henry Cavill's Panned Thriller Night Hunter aka Nomis is Streaming on Paramount+

As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of watching films and dissecting performances, I can confidently say that Henry Cavill continues to surprise me. The man may have faced a few setbacks with his recent theatrical releases, but he’s proven time and again that streaming is his secret weapon.

Fans’ affection for Superman actor Henry Cavill remains strong, as his previously overlooked 2019 action film (also recognized as Nomis) has unexpectedly soared to the summit of Paramount+’s global movie rankings. Despite recent challenges in his career – parting ways with beloved roles in the former DC franchise and the Netflix series The Witcher, and seeing his more recent films Argylle and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare struggle to gain traction at the box office – Cavill appears to be able to reclaim success in the realm of streaming.

The film “Night Hunter” is a thrilling blend of action and psychology, helmed by director David Raymond. In this gripping tale, Henry Cavill portrays a tenacious detective delving into the dark underbelly of child abduction cases, working alongside a team to capture the perpetrator who has kidnapped the ward of a former judge. The movie boasts an impressive cast that includes Henry Cavill, Ben Kingsley, Stanley Tucci, Minka Kelly, and Nathan Fillion, along with other talented actors. Initially premiered at the LA Film Festival in 2018 under the name “Nomis,” the title was altered before its 2019 release to attract a younger audience more inclined to choose movies based on their titles.

The movie “Night Hunter” flopped at the box office and was soon forgotten, receiving poor reviews during its theatrical release. Its video-on-demand launch didn’t generate much interest either, which might have been exacerbated by some negative criticism directed towards Henry Cavill. Despite a dismal 13% Tomatometer score, the audience’s rating on Rotten Tomatoes is somewhat better at 50%, although still deemed “rotten”. Nonetheless, the film has garnered attention upon its debut on Paramount+ this week.

Henry Cavill, an actor with a substantial fanbase, has been facing less enthusiasm from viewers lately concerning his recent theatrical outings. However, it’s worth noting that many of his most devoted fans seem to be primarily captivated by his roles as Superman or Geralt in The Witcher. Nonetheless, there remains a certain charm about him that continues to garner notable responses on streaming platforms.

In a similar vein, Night Hunter was initially overlooked upon its release but has since found a new fanbase on streaming platforms. Interestingly, this isn’t the first instance where Henry Cavill has experienced such delayed success. Notably, both his 2024 films, the Matthew Vaughn-directed spy comedy Argylle and Guy Ritchie’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, underperformed significantly at the box office, falling short of their budget expectations.

Regardless, both movies enjoyed outstanding performances on Apple TV+ and Prime Video, leading the movie rankings for several weeks. This success complements Cavill’s growing popularity in “The Witcher” on Netflix, as well as his roles in the Millie Bobby Brown series “Enola Holmes” and a brief appearance as Wolverine in this summer’s “Deadpool & Wolverine.” It seems that despite some underperforming films, there is a keen audience eagerly anticipating their next Cavill appearance.

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that Henry Cavill is working on some exciting new ventures. He’s gearing up to bring “Warhammer 40k” to life on Prime Video, and he’s also diving back into the realm of fantasy with the remake of “Highlander,” although it seems these projects are currently in a holding pattern. Furthermore, the actor is anticipated to be part of Guy Ritchie’s upcoming film, “In the Grey.” Adding to the excitement, there are rumors swirling about Cavill potentially starring in a big screen adaptation of “Voltron.
