On an ordinary day, happiness can sometimes feel elusive for a variety of reasons. Yet, something that brought immense joy to millions of cinema enthusiasts in 2018 was the exceptional romantic comedy, “Crazy Rich Asians“. The talk of a sequel to this blockbuster movie started almost immediately after its release, but production on the project has faced numerous delays. Now, actor Henry Golding has mentioned that “things are moving forward” with the sequel, and I hope his wish for Jon M. Chu to be involved comes true.
What Did Crazy Rich Asians Star Henry Golding Say About The Sequel And Jon M. Chu?
For quite some time following the release and massive success of “Crazy Rich Asians” (a film featuring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Michelle Yeoh, among others), conversations centered around “China Rich Girlfriend”. The announcement of this movie, a potential sequel based on the second book in Kevin Kwan’s series, came swiftly after the initial film’s premiere. However, it has taken a considerable amount of time to finalize details about who, when, where, why, and how for this upcoming film.
During a chat with E! News not too long ago, the star of “Another Simple Favor,” Henry Golding, shared updates on the eagerly awaited movie. He mentioned:
Adele Lim is now leading the project. She’s a showrunner and co-wrote the first one with Peter Chiarelli. Recently, she met with us (me and Gemma) in London to discuss our characters. So, things are progressing – they’re moving forward.
Wow, this news is fantastic, but I can’t help feeling like we’ve been here before. When “China Rich Girlfriend” was announced, it was mentioned that Chiarelli and Lim would team up again as co-writers, with Jon M. Chu returning to direct, as he did in the original film. However, about a year later, there were reports of an unfair pay disagreement that led to Lim departing the project (which Chu backed).
After initially looking for another writer with Asian roots, they returned to Amy Wang to write the story in late March 2022. However, it’s unclear if the script is still under Wang’s management as Golding didn’t confirm. Interestingly, Lim (known for directing one of the funniest films of 2023, “Joy Ride,” and set to direct “Princess Diaries 3”) seems involved in the project. This raises questions about Jon M. Chu’s role in the production.
According to Golding’s statement, Chu and Lim are actively involved in a “Crazy Rich Asians” series for Max, with Lim serving as the showrunner and both of them taking on executive producer roles. However, it seems that the director of “In the Heights” is not involved in the production of the sequel to the film at this time. Golding also mentioned that Nina Jacobson, who’s also an executive producer for the TV series, has come back to help produce the upcoming movie.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but speculate: Could it be possible that we manage to secure Jon Machete Chu for our project? He’s been raking in billions at the box office lately! Wow, what a talent! However, let me clarify, we’re doing everything we can to reunite the team as best as possible.
It’s likely that with Chu contributing to the show, he won’t refrain from participating in the development of the sequel. Given his busy schedule due to the upcoming releases of “Wicked” and its sequel “Wicked: For Good”, it would be fantastic if he can find some time to add his unique touch to the “Crazy Rich Asians” sequel while he’s preparing for the musical’s theater release in 2025.
