Henry Thomas Might Not Be In The Life Of Chuck, But He Still Had Plenty To Say About Mike Flanagan’s Upcoming Stephen King Adaptation

Henry Thomas Might Not Be In The Life Of Chuck, But He Still Had Plenty To Say About Mike Flanagan’s Upcoming Stephen King Adaptation

As a long-time fan and follower of Mike Flanagan’s work, I must admit that the news about his upcoming film, “The Life of Chuck,” not featuring Henry Thomas leaves me a little crestfallen. It feels like losing a dear friend at a party who just stepped outside for a smoke.

It seems unlikely I’ll have to search extensively to find fellow movie enthusiasts who are disappointed that writer/director Mike Flanagan’s next film, “The Life of Chuck,” won’t be part of the 2024 lineup. As we know, indie distributor Neon intends to release it the following summer after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Regrettably, Henry Thomas, a frequent collaborator with Flanagan, will not appear in the film’s cast, which is led by Tom Hiddleston. However, that didn’t prevent Thomas from expressing excitement about Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation when he spoke to TopMob.

I had a chat with Mr. Thomas on the day of the press event for his latest movie, “The Curse of the Necklace”. In our discussion, he expressed some feelings of happiness to TopMob and also mentioned one aspiration he has for filmmaker, Mr. Flanagan’s future success.

Well, to clarify, I shouldn’t take credit for the success of “The Life of Chuck,” as I wasn’t involved with it. My last collaboration with Mike was on “The Fall of the House of Usher.” That being said, I’m thrilled that they won the audience award at the Toronto International Film Festival, and I believe it’s fantastic! It’s also exciting to see Mike explore different genres, as he’s a versatile filmmaker with great potential beyond horror films.

Mike Flanagan and Henry Thomas have collaborated since 2016, starting with “Ouija: Origin of Evil,” followed by projects such as “Doctor Sleep” and “The Midnight Club,” along with “The Fall of the House of Usher.” Given this history, and considering Eric Eisenberg’s enthusiastic review, “The Life of Chuck” from TIFF, it’s natural to speculate if Mr. Thomas might be featured in the upcoming film.

It’s a bit disappointing that the collaboration between Mike Flanagan and Henry Thomas has come to an end, since it was fascinating to witness their working bond grow across various projects. I can still recall being taken aback by Thomas’ unexpected appearance in “Doctor Sleep”, a performance that added depth to this undervalued Stephen King adaptation. Both this adaption and its predecessor, “The Shining”, are must-watch Halloween movies.

It’s reassuring to understand that this situation isn’t like those unfortunate instances where a disagreement caused a professional separation. Instead, I hope for a remarkable comeback of the Hill House creator’s involvement in future Stephen King projects, particularly his abandoned Revival adaptation. Yet, I share the sentiments of the cherished E.T. actor regarding this matter.

As a gaming enthusiast, delving into the realms of both emotional turmoil and sheer terror is something I find myself drawn to, much like the director of Oculus. With Mr. Thomas praising his knack for it once more, I’m eagerly anticipating that The Life of Chuck could be another timeless Stephen King masterpiece for Mike Flanagan.

Frank Darabont’s career in the horror genre significantly progressed due to his work on The Shawshank Redemption, and it seems that Mike Flanagan is also moving towards such a project, which is one of many reasons why Henry Thomas, myself, and numerous Flanagan fans are eagerly waiting for Chuck with high expectations.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m eagerly awaiting the release of that project, though the exact date is still unknown. But knowing it’s set to hit screens in 2025 gives me something exciting to look forward to! In the interim, fans of Henry Thomas can catch his chilling new horror flick, “The Curse of the Necklace,” now showing in theaters and on demand.

To keep up-to-date with Maine’s horror master, read Eric Eisenberg’s column The King Beat. It’s an excellent resource for everything related to his work, known as “The Beam”. Additionally, don’t forget that you can watch the movie “Doctor Sleep” using your Amazon Prime Video subscription. Why miss out on it?
