As a long-time resident of East Asia and a fervent admirer of tradition, I must say that the evolution of mooncakes has been nothing short of astounding! From the humble beginnings of lotus seed paste and salted egg yolks, these festive treats have now become a canvas for creativity and innovation.
Once more, we approach the season where East Asian brands prepare for the Mid-Autumn Festival. This occurs on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, a time-honored tradition that marks the harvest season. Families and friends gather to partake in mooncakes, a festive pastry dating back centuries. Nowadays, these mooncakes have transformed from their original glazed crusts, lotus seed paste filling, and salted egg yolk centers. Innovative flavors and modern packaging are common now, along with additional items designed to enhance the celebratory mood.
During the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is a special time for families and friends to reunite, brands such as KENZO, Tumi, and Loewe have chosen to incorporate games into their packaging. For instance, KENZO has reimagined Chinese checkers, while Tumi offers a sleek version of Connect 4, and Loewe provides a minimalist wooden spinning top toy.
In other locations, brands like Louis Vuitton, Cartier, Baccarat, and Audemars Piguet have chosen to decorate festively. Instead of serving mooncakes, Louis Vuitton offers a hands-on DIY kit showcasing traditional paper crafts. Last year, Cartier showcased a light-up structure resembling a Chinese house, this time around they’ve created an elegant portable lantern adorned with intricate paper cutout scenes. Baccarat is preparing an elegant moving sand art display for their festive decorations, and Audemars Piguet has gone all out with a miniature dollhouse-style exhibition case featuring a light-up background mimicking today’s glowing moon.
In a traditional vein, Fendi provides a collection of four petite mooncakes within a straightforward, golden-hued display box that echoes their refined brand image. On the other hand, Saint Laurent’s mooncakes are presented in a glossy, multi-tiered jewelry box, symbolizing their luxurious brand identity. Lastly, Gucci embraces a lunar motif by enclosing its mooncakes within wooden boxes, complete with all the lunar phases etched on the lid.
