As a gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating virtual worlds and saying goodbye to digital companions, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia as Leighton bids farewell to her friends in The Sex Lives of College Girls. Just like that final boss battle where you have to say goodbye to your trusted companion before venturing into the unknown, Leighton is leaving Essex College for greener pastures at MIT.

The OG girl group in The Sex Lives of College Girls has officially lost a member.
In the second episode of the third season of the Max show that aired on Thursday, Bela (Amrit Kaur), Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet) and Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) bid farewell to Leighton (Reneé Rapp). Though viewers had anticipated Rapp’s departure from the series this season, they were unsure of the specific timing… until now.
In the second installment, Leighton confronts a challenging choice by moving from Essex College to MIT. Although her partner, Alicia (Midori Francis), resides in Boston too, Leighton decides on this transition primarily due to MIT’s robust math program that will aid her aspirations for a career in finance.
At some point, Rapp expresses to her companions, “I’d rather not go.” She admits that the thought of being apart from them fills her with fear. However, she believes that this may be a necessary step if she is to prioritize her future.
However, prior to embarking on their journey with her father, Leighton decides to spend one last night of fun at Essex with her closest friends. This special evening involves a pre-party in their former college dorm suite.
Justin Noble, one of the co-showrunners, previously discussed with The Hollywood Reporter the process behind Rapp’s departure storyline: “We arrived at this idea fairly swiftly. When contemplating how college students part ways, you’re rather restricted. It wasn’t as if Reneé’s character was going to embark on a hike, and then Kimberly would say, ‘You mean the treacherous hike near the cliff?’ And then, she falls off or something. In truth, the only viable option was that she would transfer to another university.
As our conversation turned to the topic, Mindy and I found ourselves exchanging thoughts. We essentially agreed that Leighton Murray is someone who consistently wins. So, it’s hard to imagine any scenario where she would depart from her current path, unless it was a giant leap towards an even more successful and impactful life in the future.
The Sex Lives of College Girls drops new episodes on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Max.
