Hypeart held its “Threshold” exhibition at Bonhams Los Angeles on February 20, with a special gathering. The evening was filled, attracting guests who participated in a panel discussion moderated by Isabel Norsten, Bonhams’ expert in Post-War & Contemporary Art. Norsten facilitated an engaging dialogue centered around the show’s concept of transcending limitations, involving esteemed artist Shepard Fairey, Hypeart’s Keith Estiler, Evan Pricco from Juxtapoz, gallerist Richard Scarry of Subliminal Projects, and Ralph Taylor, Bonhams’ Head of 20th/21st Century Art.
The conversation concluded with the presentation of a book titled “Fairey-isms,” published jointly by No More Rulers and Princeton University Press. This compilation includes significant quotes from Fairey, the artist and activist known for creating the famous “Hope” poster of Obama and the street campaign “Obey Giant.
With VOSS Water providing refreshment, the discussion flowed smoothly into a private gathering where unique drinks crafted from Diageo’s selection of premium spirits – Don Julio, Bulleit, and Tanqueray – were served.
Up until February 21st, THRESHOLD delves into the dynamic interplay between history and change, featuring artworks by Shepard Fairey, Beverly Pepper, Sam Gilliam, among others. This exhibition explores evolving borders in both art and society, offering striking pieces such as Magdalena Abakanowicz’s “Figure on Beam” (approximately 1994). The sculpture, depicting a headless figure swathed in rugged burlap and precariously perched on a beam, mirrors the late Polish sculptor’s traumatic experiences during Nazi occupation. It symbolizes themes of endurance and fortitude.
In 2019, Elizabeth Neel’s artwork titled US 11, one of several pieces created for Project Angel Food’s upcoming charity auction supporting Los Angeles wildfire recovery efforts, portrays an image of the American flag that appears broken or fragmented. This fractured representation reflects the political divisions within the United States.
Across various areas of space, Shepard Fairey’s latest and old artworks continue to demonstrate his profound influence. By connecting past and current times, they engage in a conversation about resistance and transformation.
