In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, an unforgettable instance occurs where Hermione, portrayed by Emma Watson, undergoes a transformation – not quite human anymore. This happens after she mistakenly drinks Polyjuice Potion contaminated with cat fur instead of Millicent Bulstrode’s hair. As a result, Watson’s face on screen morphs into that of a cat, creating quite the spectacle. Interestingly, it has been revealed that the actress who doubled Hermione during this scene shared her account of filming it, shedding light on the fact that it wasn’t just Emma Watson on camera during that moment.
Flick Miles, the stand-in for Emma Watson during the first three Harry Potter films, was usually brought in for shots where Watson’s face wasn’t required. She also assisted in arranging scenes. During the making of Chamber of Secrets, however, her face accidentally appeared on screen while filming the well-known scene involving the Polyjuice Potion potion turning into a cat.
She clarified to People that the entire incident was due to her skin’s sensitivity towards the adhesive used in makeup, causing a reaction.
In that section, I was utilized differently. Emma subtly responded to the adhesive they applied to secure her makeup. I had a fantastic time collaborating with the special effects crew, and filming that sequence was enjoyable.

This BTS instance isn’t just reminiscent of a Harry Potter character stepping up to the plate, but Miles also benefited significantly from it.
She shared how much she enjoyed collaborating with the makeup crew, experimenting with various makeup designs and prosthetics. Subsequently, she reminisced about presenting these different cat looks to the film’s director, Chris Columbus.
We conducted several presentations where variously colored cats were displayed, as our original choice was a stunning ginger one with a rich red hue. However, Director Chris Columbus felt that the cat was too attractive for this role and preferred a gray cat, aiming for a slightly less striking appearance instead.
Indeed, it appears the cat is “not as beautiful” and quite alarming. Just like Hermione mentions in “Chamber of Secrets”, the potion should only be used with human hair. Unfortunately, she unintentionally ingested cat fur instead of Millicent’s hair. Consequently, the reaction was unfavorable.
As Harry and Ron effortlessly switched places with Goyle and Crabbe, respectively, and just as easily returned to their original selves, poor Hermione ended up in the hospital wing. In all, this comical incident underscored that the Polyjuice Potion is both a delightful aspect of the Wizarding World and a potentially hazardous one to navigate.
