Sajid Khan recently expressed his thoughts on the declining notion of the traditional “hero” in Bollywood, suggesting that instead we have more leading actors rather than true heroes. In an interview with Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limbachiyaa on their YouTube channel, Bharti TV, Sajid provided a thoughtful analysis of how the concept of a hero has evolved over time.

According to Sajid, the classic Bollywood hero, represented by stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, and Mithun Chakraborty, is almost extinct. “We have very few heroes left,” he said. “There are no true heroes today, only leads.” He explained that the former heroes are now just leads, and that in modern times, anyone can star in a film because the value of a hero has decreased.

Khan underscored the fact that the fundamental spirit of a hero is predominantly embodied in contemporary South Indian films. He observed that the hero’s significance remains robust in the South, as demonstrated by the extravagant entry sequences and over-the-top characterizations prevalent in their movies. In his opinion, heroes in South Indian cinema are expected to uphold a moral code—they should refrain from performing actions on screen that would be viewed as unethical or immoral in society. He also mentioned that while the term “super-lead” may not be used, the term “superhero” is, reflecting the esteemed status heroes once held in the film industry.

Pondering over the evolving nature of the movie business, Sajid noticed that stars from past eras didn’t rely on bulky physiques to leave an impression. He brought up Vinod Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan as examples, both lacking muscular bodies but expressively conveying intensity through their facial expressions. He attributed Salman Khan with popularizing the gym-sculpted look in Bollywood, especially post the release of Maine Pyaar Kiya, which sparked the six-pack trend. However, he was swift to point out that being physically fit doesn’t automatically make someone a hero; instead, the true intensity should be reflected in an actor’s eyes.

To back his standpoint, Sajid pointed towards Ranbir Kapoor’s physical transformation for the film Animal, suggesting that Kapoor’s performance could have been equally impactful without the muscle build-up, due to the emotional depth conveyed through his eyes. He also highlighted Sunny Deol’s role in Gadar 2, noting that despite not having a gym-toned body, Deol’s natural presence was compelling and forceful, likening it to a “desi physique” that still excelled in action sequences.
