Ever since the release of the latest trailer for “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach,” there’s been a lot of excitement surrounding the game. Although Norman Reedus is the main character, the sneak peek seems to place significant focus on the newly introduced character Neil, portrayed by Luca Marinelli.
As a dedicated admirer, I’ve noticed an intriguing resemblance between Neil and the Metal Gear Solid hero, Solid Snake. It seems that Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind this iconic character, intentionally cast someone who looks like Marinelli, as he first took notice of him in 2020.
Luca Marinelli is Solid Snake
Since the trailer’s release, fans on Reddit have frequently been discussing a post from Kojima dating back to 2020, where he expressed his belief that Marinelli bears a striking resemblance to Solid Snake.
Kojima remarked, “Luca Marinelli has recently caught my attention after watching ‘The Old Guard’ and ‘Martin Eden.’ I believe his career is on the rise and his fame will grow. Additionally, if he were to wear a bandana, he’d resemble Solid Snake remarkably.
At the end of the newest trailer, it appears that Neil is wearing a bandana, suggesting he’s the leader of a group of government-employed, elite soldiers in a special task force. Their objective? To thwart the plans of Sam, Fragile, and their team.
Nothing’s For Sure Yet

Ever since the announcement of Death Stranding 2, I’ve found myself eagerly piecing together snippets from the trailers, as Kojima Productions has kept us fans on our toes with their enigmatic story hints.
Neil isn’t disclosed too deeply, yet his appearance suggests a solider who’s hesitant about his role. There’s a possibility that he could have romantic ties with the fresh character, Lucy, portrayed by Alissa Jung.
In the new game, Neil, who has a military history and leads a special team, appears to be taking over the character previously played by Mads Mikkelsen from the initial installment. Although specific details about their abilities remain uncertain, given that this is a Kojima production, it’s likely that they will look stylish and impressive – and fire-wielding skeleton soldiers align perfectly with colossal ink monsters and physicians sporting two right hands.
Metal Gear Solid without Kojima
It’s worth noting that despite parting ways with the studio behind the Solid Snake franchise, Konami, Kojima found a way to subtly refer to it in Death Stranding.
In 2021, Konami intends to roll out an upgraded version of Hideo Kojima’s “Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater,” initially launched in 2004. Despite their efforts to continue the “Metal Gear” series following Kojima’s departure, it seems that remaking timeless games might prove extremely profitable for the company. This strategy has proven effective for Capcom and their “Resident Evil” franchises.
It’s likely that Kojima intends to create a distinct character for Neil, unlike Snake. Yet, imagine the humor if instead he launches a game with a phony Snake in June, while the original Snake’s game drops in August!
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is set to launch for the PS5 on June 26.
