As a dedicated fan of musicals and Disney productions, I find myself brimming with excitement at the prospect of Kenny Ortega reimagining “The Phantom of the Opera” for a younger audience. Having grown up watching his masterpieces like “High School Musical” and “Descendants,” I can only imagine the magic he’ll weave with this iconic tale.
Filmmaker Kenny Ortega is teaming up with Disney+ to revamp Gaston Leroux’s timeless novel for a more mature audience. While the project is currently in its initial stages, it could develop into a series much like Ortega’s other successful Disney productions, such as “Descendants” and “High School Musical.
This morning, Deadline announced the production of Ortega’s “Phantom,” yet much about the project remains undisclosed. Originally penned in the 1800s and set in France during the 1880s, this story revolves around Erik, a secretive, partially disfigured musician dwelling beneath the Paris Opera House’s waterways. His fixation on Christine, a gifted young soprano and opera member, leads to tension and ultimately violence, as Erik attempts to hide his identity while simultaneously aiming to make Christine a star. It remains uncertain which of these aspects will be incorporated into Ortega’s adaptation. However, a screenplay for the project has already been drafted by Giovanni M. Porta, a prominent figure in the entertainment industry known for his roles as writer, producer, and actor on Paramount+’s “At Midnight,” featuring Diego Boneta.
According to The DisInsider, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding the upcoming project, as it’s hoped that Kenny Ortega will turn his Phantom into a franchise similar to Descendants or High School Musical. If the adaptation is successful, Ortega – with over half a century of directing and production experience – seems perfectly suited for the task. His recent work includes numerous hit Disney franchises, but he’s also known for his roles as director, producer, and choreographer on iconic films like Dirty Dancing, Newsies, and Hocus Pocus. This diverse background may mean that elements from the Broadway version of The Phantom of the Opera could be incorporated into Ortega’s Phantom as well.
Bringing the Phantom to Life — Again
Ever since its debut in 1910, I’ve found myself captivated by Gaston Leroux’s “The Phantom of the Opera”. Among all adaptations, the one that truly stole my heart was the Broadway rendition penned by Andrew Lloyd Webber back in 1988. This show ran for an astounding 35 years until its closure in 2023, leaving behind a legacy marked by seven Tony Awards and numerous records broken. A film adaptation bearing the same name hit theaters in 2004, serving as a devoted tribute to the Broadway musical. Gerard Butler played the enigmatic Phantom, while Emmy Rossum brought Christine Daaé to life on screen.
In a youth-oriented adaptation of “Phantom,” Ortega will likely introduce some significant alterations due to its focus on younger audiences. For instance, original music and choreography could be incorporated, given Ortega’s past accomplishments. The introduction of new songs would distinguish this version from others, while also allowing for the addition of lighter, more family-friendly aspects to counterbalance the story’s usual dark themes like murder, revenge, and envy. However, since the project is in its infancy, specific details about Ortega’s plans for this retelling of the tragic romance remain uncertain.
