Highlights from Phillips’ ‘Reloaded: The Rebirth of Mechanical Watchmaking 1980-1999’ Auction

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for horology, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming Phillips auction, “Reloaded: The Rebirth of Mechanical Watchmaking 1980-1999.” My heart skips a beat at the prospect of getting my hands on some of these exquisite timepieces that defined the horological landscape in those dynamic decades.

Phillips in collaboration with Bacs & Russo is preparing for “Reloaded: The Resurgence of Mechanical Watchmaking 1980-1999,” an upcoming thematic auction showcasing a variety of timepieces from the ’80s and ’90s that significantly influenced the world of horology.

The collection encompasses extraordinary, avant-garde watches from prestigious manufacturers like Philippe Dufour, F.P. Journe, Derek Platt, and Rolex. Highlighting the assortment is the first-ever Rainbow Daytona, reference 16599 by Rolex, a stunning watch adorned in white gold and boasting a dazzling bezel embellished with gradient-colored sapphires. Valued at approximately 3 million CHF ($3.5 million USD), this unique piece from the ’90s is now considered one of the rarest and most exclusive editions of the model.

This sale will prominently feature a Tourbillon Souverain à Remontoire d’Egalité, the first watch ever sold by François-Paul Journe, the creator of F.P.Journe. Valued at over 2 million Swiss Francs (approximately $2.3 million USD), this exceptional timepiece is one of only three that were personally crafted by its founder.

Notable items in the collection are the Philippe Dufour Duality and Derek Pratt’s Oval Pocket watch. The Duality stands out with its fully brushed platinum case and was the first wristwatch to incorporate a double escapement. On the other hand, the Oval Pocket watch demonstrates exceptional craftsmanship, equipped with an advanced flying tourbillon, remontoir, and detent escapement. These remarkable timepieces, showcasing horological excellence, are projected to sell for between 800,000 – 1.6 million Swiss Francs, equivalent to approximately $945,093 – $1.8 million USD.

The “Reloaded: The Rebirth of Mechanical Watchmaking 1980-1999” auction is scheduled for November 8th, to be held at the Hotel President in Geneva. Prior to the event, a variety of these timepieces will be showcased in a traveling exhibition, visiting cities such as London, New York, Singapore, Dubai, Hong Kong, and Geneva Watch Days this week.
