Hoda Kotb to Exit NBC’s ‘Today’ Show

As a gamer who’s seen more respawn points than I can count, Hoda Kotb‘s decision to step down from NBC’s Today show feels like hitting level 99 and deciding it’s time for an epic quest. After two decades of anchoring, she’s reached the pinnacle of her career, yet she’s not content to rest on her laurels. Instead, she’s eager to explore new territories, to seek out fresh challenges, and to make the most of the finite time we all have.

Hoda Kotb is planning to exit NBC‘s Today show.

On Thursday’s broadcast, the NBC news anchor shared the latest updates and revealed her plans to continue serving as co-anchor until early 2025. After that, she will take on a fresh position within NBC News.

Hitting the milestone of 60 years old was a significant moment for me, as I began contemplating what this next decade signifies, what it may bring, and what it has in store for me. It felt like the right time to turn over a new leaf at 60 and embark on something fresh.” Kotb shared this reflection surrounded by her co-hosts on the Studio 1A couch from The Today Show.

She mentioned that since she had her children later in life, she felt it was important to give them a larger share of the limited time she has left. In other words, she wants to spend more quality time with them because she’s aware of the finiteness of our existence.

Savannah Guthrie expressed her feelings after the news, saying, “We adore you immensely, and when your gaze falls upon these tears, know they’re born of love, for you are deeply cherished. Frankly, it’s hard to envision, let alone imagine this world without you. I simply want to acknowledge my pride for my friend. It takes courage, a great deal of it, to depart when you’re at the peak of your career, from something that’s exceptional, something you cherish, where life is effortless and delightful… Your bravery inspires me.

Since 2018, Kotb has been sharing co-anchoring duties on NBC’s Today with Guthrie, having spent a total of 26 years at NBC News – first as a correspondent, then as an anchor. She was the one who initiated the fourth hour of the Today show, sitting alongside Kathie Lee Gifford and Jenna Bush Hager during her tenure.

For twenty-six years, NBC News has been my professional home – ten years with Dateline, seven on the 7 o’clock news, sixteen on the 10 o’clock news. As I reflect, I see your faces and remember the ways you’ve supported me and motivated me. That’s the song of my heart playing. Many of my work relationships have grown into precious friendships. Savannah, you are my rock; Jenna, my unwavering ally. Al, we go back a long way at 30 Rock. Craig, Carson, Sheinelle, and Dylan, you are my family. Libby, Mazz, and Talia, I look up to you as fearless leaders. I will deeply miss each one of you at Today.

Though the details of her new position at NBC weren’t disclosed on Thursday, it’s anticipated that she will play a part in the show in some fashion following her departure as co-anchor.
